The name of the game reflects what happens when you play it
Creative puzzle game in the same vein as FEZ or Antichamber and sprinkles of Starseed Pilgrim.
Play if you like cryptic games and figuring out what to do on your own.
Worth way more than the asking price.
Hello everyone, I am the sleepy philosopher game-designer, G.E.M.Simov, a goon that tends to enjoy sleeping, here to tell you about a game that goes by “Zzzz-Zzzz-Zzzz”, which could also be called “Triple-Quadruple-Z”, or simply “That game about sleeping”. Henceforth, I’ll refer to it as THE GAME. Sorry to those of you who lost!
Simple review details - I rank games on an out of 10 basis, granting up to 3 points in 3 categories, as well as a last, single point from my own self, depending on my experience with it.
Gameplay
How would this game even be described? An abstract indie puzzle platformer, perhaps? That ought to be able to tell the reader more than they need to know, as it is exactly that. When one sees it and comes to know it, that’s how it is described, yet it also feels as though that description is somewhat lacking, somewhat untrue.
It’s not that there’s no platforming, but the platforming is just there as a means of preserving the ‘game’ aspect of the game. It’s not that there’s no puzzles, but these puzzles face some issues that really make me wonder if they are, indeed, puzzles in the first place.
An example of the ‘game’ aspect being somewhat forcefully preserved would be one of the first levels the Player encounters. It’s a set of platforms, one-two-three, which go up, then repeat in the opposite direction, still going up, and then keep repeating infinitely. The Player is then tasked with jumping from platform to platform for a certain amount of time, whilst the abstract narration pops in… Creating a concept, which concept is being enforced by the platforms.
See, these platforms are endless. The Player Character can go up infinitely - which is precisely what the developer/game intends as a possibility - but in reality what is wanted of the Player is to consider the narration, conceptualize that, which is being spoken of, and then solve the puzzle - which puzzle is to fall down from the platform when new text stops appearing.
What indicates that this should happen? Well, nothing. But maybe there is something, as in a previous level the player similarly ascends a number of platforms and then gets told that there’s something down below, urging them to go back all the way down to see if there is something down below. There turns out to be something down below, which then creates the idea that the Player should backtrack, or maybe even lose their progress on purpose, to check for these newly appeared rewards.
So then the puzzle with the infinitely ascending platforms makes sense, does it not? That is true, it does. Then, following this logic, every consecutive puzzle in the game should have its solution hinted at in a previous ‘puzzle’ or level of the game, right?
Unfortunately, that is not the case. Naturally, due to the fact that this game is so tightly bound to dreams, one could argue that the fact a puzzle’s solution is not hinted at in a previous level, in a different dream, is indicative of the nature of dreams - after all, they are not all truly connected, are they?
Then, however, the game goes on and connects all dreams - in a literal sense, through a massive hub world - and in a less literal sense, but still relatively literal, as each dream comes as a point in a sequence of points. Sure, the sequences may be different, but the dreams do have connections to other dreams.
Yet there’s a large blot of lacking. Lacking in general, not lacking a certain thing. Maybe consistency, but that’s going to come slightly later.
The puzzles in the game are interesting. Almost all of them are somewhat simple, yet with that simplicity comes a measure of amusement. Then, there are the ones that don’t seem simple, the ones that appear obtuse beyond reason, the ones that seem hard for the sake of being hard.
Naturally, the game features a vast array of puzzles, a vast array of platforming sections, as well as a vast amount of waiting for things to happen. The first two things are good, the second one - not so much, but why?
Well, the game does not actually force the Player to wait directly, but does so indirectly. The Player Character (PC) moves painfully slowly. In most of the levels, the PC wobbles through at a most displeasing pace. If one was meant to experience the levels once, maybe twice at most, thn that would not be a problem, but due to the fact that the game’s puzzles are so plentiful that some span a multitude of dreams, there’s a very real likelihood that one will be forced to go through a level (dream) more than they would want to.
In addition to that, one can fail. Failure, then, requires repetition - as many of the dreams have different endings, or rather can lead to different points in the sequence of dreams, thus requiring to be played through a multitude of times. An example would be the ‘Depth’ dream, in which the Player can fail many times, whilst also having at least three possible conclusions to the dream.
What this creates is a very real sense of tedium. I am interested in finding out where this leads, how it gets resolved, but the act of finding that out it so bothersome that I don’t want to do it. The act of moving is so sluggish and unpleasant to partake in that I simply fail to enjoy it.
Unfortunately, that’s a very big issue. A humongous problem, actually, due to the fact that we’re talking about a game, and the most important thing in a game is the enjoyment of playing said game. That’s the ‘gameplay’ and its requirement to be good. In this game… That aspect is not good.
Sure, there are moments, levels, which feature increased mobility, which are a lot more enjoyable to go through than the other levels, but they are rare. Then, the issue is exasperated by the fact that there’s a ‘Reward’ system, which reward system features ‘improvements’.
One of those is the ability to fly in SOME levels. Not all, but some, according to the Reward. Unfortunately, that SOME means… The Hub world and that one level in which you unlock the reward. There’s the Reward letting you run, but then out of 10 levels you can only run in 3.
Supposedly, the Player is rewarded by the game for doing certain things, for finding secrets or going out of their way to do something specific - like jumping 200 times on a button - but then that reward is not actually a reward, because it does not really take effect.
Frankly, that’s disappointing. The game has interesting ideas, some are executed in interesting ways, but, alas… It isn’t that good a game. 1/3

Unfortunately, there's a limit to how long a steam review can be, so I'll urge you to take a look at my website: gemsimov.com to find the remainder of this review.

An interesting and cute game. It is fun uncovering the different dreams. The game is really vague about what you are supposed to do in that dream so do open a walktrough while playing it, unless you want to be stuck on a dream for 10+ minutes.
Like several others have already said, this is a true indie gem. Doesn't try to copy others, having its unique style both in graphics and in the game itself.
It's simple, lighthearted, and it quickly draws you into this dream game.
If only my dreams were as interesting as these.
After playing this game. I learned the letter z when I want to mazzzzzzzive looking at me strangely ) and so I advise everyone. Pretty good and fun game
Terrible. No clue what to do. No explanation. Even after looking in a guide. "I can fly here". Great, how? What to do?
Very weird, and difficult to navigate - but once you begin to understand how it works, it opens up before you. If you want to play this game to completion, you really need to have a map of the dream links open - but if you're just playing casually, it's very relaxing. It really does feel like a dream, with weird logic and skewed perspectives, but it has funny elements as well. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it's very difficult to describe! High replayability - but in an unusual way, since the dreams themselves don't change, and all paths through the dreams intertwine.
Overall, I highly recommend this game. Some parts are tricky, some are frustrating, but the atmosphere is one of profound peace. Especially for such a low price!
I will say it took me a long time to figure out that the codes were supposed to be set as your controls; it was very frustrating when I was trying to access certain pathways.

Not really sure how to classify this game, so I'll call it a puzzle platformer. The levels operate on all sorts of bizzare ideas and logic, with an emphasis on minimal interaction that builds a greater story from the disparate pieces. At least some of these levels had me stumped for minutes because of missing information or even a required control scheme.
If you feel like taking on some surreal riddles and dream logic, this is a perfect title.
First off, I LOVE this game. The mechanics are nice and unique, and it can keep me occupied for hours. I think that people who don't like this and find it boring don't understand or gotten to a point that it gets fun. I first played this game on GameJolt years ago, and back then the developer helped me figure a lot of things out, so thanks for that man. I don't think that I would've ever found out that Changing the controls also opens some doors. Love this game, and I love this dev. <3
I was pretty excited about this one, because I love dreams and weirdness, and the thought of exploring a dream world from a side view with upgrades allowing you to reach new areas seemed like... well... a dream come true. This is so dull and sluggish that it's frustrating. I wasn't expecting an action-packed dash through an intense world where I'm fighting off legions of nightmares with twin machine guns or anything, but the walk speed was torturous, and you have this sad little jump. I can tolerate this sort of thing if the game is designed around it, but this gives you a big hub world with many entry points into different dreams that's laid out like some kind of Escher painting, and unless you've been in the dream before, you can't use these entry points, so you have to wander around until you find one that you've already entered, and hope that the mostly linear dream sequence you've found has another exit that you've missed, or that it just randomly leads you to a new area.
This is the sort of thing that lives and dies by its artistic merits, and that's not immediately damning; Yume Nikki didn't have very strong gameplay, but it's my favorite Adventure title of all time. The writing comes across in text that just sits on the screen, as though it were part of the scenery. A little obtuse, but fair enough; it's a dream, after all. But what does it say? It's all observations about dreams, which could be quite profound, but they're observations that you'd hear if you'd asked a Kindergarten class to come up with a group poster about dreams. "Sometimes, my dreams are blurry." "I can fly in some dreams." "I don't like dreams that restrict my freedom." There's even one that talks about how sometimes, dreams are weird, and follows it up with how your little blob man has lost his reflection. That's the weirdest thing you could come up with? It comes off as though it's trying to be deep, but doesn't present anything of value.
So, what about the traditional artistic merits (i.e. the visuals)? Those fall flat, as well; much of what you encounter is monochrome, so color is mostly out. The biggest issue, visually, is that the artwork just isn't very good. This might be a personal bias, but while I love pixel art, I don't like the "minimalist" pixel art style used by a lot of indie developers that are trying to make something "artistic". You know the kind: people that look like the pixel equivalent of stick figures that have no facial features, aside from two little dots for eyes. The backgrounds and interactive objects aren't so bad, often approaching something unique and interesting, but they aren't enough to carry the world on their own.
In summary, I like art, and I like games, and I even like art games, but this is an art game that doesn't do well in either category.
This is a fun little game. Each "dream" is a little level - a puzzle if you will - and your goal is to find out how to progress. Sometimes this involves doing something counterintuitive like going back to sleep a bunch of times, or choosing to do the opposite of what games normally ask you to do. It's clever and weird and surprisingly fun. I don't remember buying this but I'm happy to have it in my library lol
While its a fun looking game, I was unable to grasp much of the hidden meaning or understand much of the puzzles, I know I may not be one for deep meaning but I know this game is a good game, Unfortunately it is also a very skewed one. Without any form of direction it can leave the player stuck and feeling upset attempting to understand and solve some of the unique puzzles, this may take some time to do. The Unfortunate truth is that without even a little help, I may have to turn to a walkthrough which is something I would not want at all, I will continue to play and hopefully understand more but for the meanwhile I find some elements in the game tediously done
It was a fun platform game which started out great, good ideas, although it was hard to understand what to do in each room, but when you got a hang of it, it was quiet amuzing to play. Although the game fucked me up when I had to change my movement keys, which was both fun and hard at the same time.
I woul recommend my friends to try this game, but I would not pay for it once again.
Amazingly extensive and intriguing story (or lack thereof, but it works here). Controls are simple yet effective, and stages have many creative ways to finish them. Definetely worth the two dollars, if you have the money to spend.
P.S. I actually found out about this game because I got a 90% off coupon when making badges, so kudos to you, Steam.
“There's a lot of platform jumping, but none of it's sadistic nor deadly. The real challenge lies in finding your way to the different levels and solving the puzzles within them.”
IndieGames
“Zzzz-Zzzz-Zzzz’s other great strength is that it takes full advantage of its premise with varied dreamscapes. Zombies, deadly ceilings, and ghostly reflections all wait for you, interspersed with pleasant strolls through cloudy landscapes and tinkling background music. The goal of the game takes a while to emerge, but Zzzz-Zzzz-Zzzz is a pleasure just to explore.”
The Absolute
Wait wait wait , i not really play it , i mean i play it when i'll sleep in real life or AFK :)
I don't expect this game to be this good. it's really an intriguing game.
But I think this version have some bugs, when I get to reality level, error poping up. and maybe I can't get "patient listener" achievement because of that.
I really like you put Rewards level to see our achievement progress.but sadly there's no steam achievement.
and,no fullscreen? why?
I recommend this game for those who want to wander and find a lot of secret in a game.
So many Z's, i almost fell asleep.
On the other hand the music is kinda nice !
i don't say it is a bad game , but It's the best game of the world
I'll buy it to give money to developer for buy good nutration to improve your brain. to make the best game like this :)
