If you like the idea of the RNG aspect, this might be for you. But it shattered the suspension of disbelief for me. It was like adding an additional element of randomness that took me away from engaging with the setting and made it feel more like a dice roll simulator.
Try it out sale and see where your feelings fall. I can't imagine the gameplay loop deepens after a short amount of play.
I've played for nearly five hours and gotten absolutely nowhere! I sort of get what I'm supposed to be doing but it's very difficult to work out any sort of strategy. That said I dig it. I'd definitely wait for it to be on sale! I'm going to keep playing it but I doubt I'll ever make it to an actual ending which is a little disappointing because the story seems really cool.
Addictive
The Shrouded Isle will show you that being the high priest of a dark god is a pretty dangerous job.
Any job, including picking flowers in a green field, can be stressful if your boss is a big enough bully. However, the threat of being yelled at, humiliated, having your bonuses taken away, or even fired is nothing compared to what awaits you as the high priest of the Slavic god Chernobog. As his name suggests, this boss will not tolerate any failures. If you don't sacrifice enough people and burn enough heretical books, he will climb out of the ocean and unleash a tirade that your rapidly cooling corpses won't be able to handle. Career prospects in The Shrouded Isle are very short-lived indeed.
The Shrouded Isle simply looks like a pleasantly depressing murder simulator with a very unique artistic expression. It's worth noting that you can swap out the basic green and black color scheme for a different color scheme if you don't want to spend a few hours feeling like you're staring at the contents of a bucket full of vomit. It's also important to know that one playthrough is usually quite short - don't expect a long campaign. Fortunately, there are 6 different endings, so there's place for replayability. 15%
Must... Purify... More...
A fun bite, especially if you get it on sale. No way to revert to a previous save or regret a bad decision (unless you go into the Application Data folder and start manually backing up your save states). Good atmosphere in the beginning; the core loop gets repetitive at the end but still provides for a very enjoyable evening or two. Plays quite a bit like a visual novel, and if only it had a skip read / fast forward option like they usually do.
this was a steal at $3. I wouldn't get it unless it's on sale, and tbh it's kind of a stat manager game which isn't my style but somewhat reminded me of Cult of the Lamb. it's easy to a degree but also the rolls can be insanely unfair. It is not hard at all to find the sinner to sacrifice but the advisors with such stats tend to heavily kneecap other sects, so it's best to take kind of a long road approach I guess. Haven't beaten it but will definitely chip away at it for $3
It's really mid.
The vibes aren't hitting and the mechanics are shallow and annoying.
You're managing 10 resource bars, trying to make sure none of them are too low, while all of them are basically interchangeable except for their names.
The annoying part is that it's also kind of a detective game, but everything is randomly generated and you don't really have many clues to operate with in trying to find the biggest sinners, so you just click "inquiry" on random dudes until you hopefully get lucky.
I got this game on sale with, admittedly, low expectations; yet, I am BEYOND pleased with this purchase and continue to come back to the game for more. The game throws you straight into lovecraftian cult procedures, so the first playthrough involves a lot of guesswork, but it's straightforward enough to not feel overwhelming.
I love the fact that traits are procedurally generated so that you can't just memorize villagers' names and cheese future playthroughs. What some might call repetitive, I feel is replayable. Each run, you can change up your strategy and try to get a different ending.
The art is beautiful (with multiple color palettes), the cult theme is oddly charming, and the gameplay is simple but engaging. If you and some friends want to have a fun night, stream it and rename villagers a la hunger games simulator. This was a fantastic game for me and my friend group, but be prepared for a lot of text and resource management. I look forward to playing more!
RNG killed the cat.
They could have done with more Cthulhu horrors and less random generated stats for characters and outcomes.
Ignore my 100% completion rate. I like The Shrouded Isle a normal amount.
BLOOD FOR CHERNOBOG! BLOOD FOR CHERNOBOG! BLOOD FOR CHERNOBOG!
This is a resource management game. Playthrough was boring. This game is way too repetitive, there is not much going on. But the atmosphere and music are good tho.
Yet another KitFox release I'm turning down.
Too much GREEN...
The Shrouded Isle - A relaxing village simulator... if your idea of relaxation is sacrificing townsfolk to appease an ancient god and managing a cult on the edge of collapse.
I noticed the game because of the art style and the Lovecraft theme, but it was the gameplay that really hooked me. You can tell the developers genuinely care about the game. The sound and atmosphere are perfect. Game is a mix of settlement management and roguelike elements.
If you don’t like the game, it’s probably just that the genre isn’t for you. Negative comments like "it’s repetitive and boring" make me laugh, it’s like saying Doom is boring because all you do is walk around and shoot demons.
I think this game does something pretty cool but it is fairly flawed. I appreciate that the game quite deftly gets me into the mind of a cult leader, down to the completely immoral way I had to start looking at my flock to make it through to the end. That said, the game doesn't have enough depth to get into once you figure out the spreadsheet style approach that makes the most sense given the unfair difficulty of it. Definitely worth trying, but probably not worth investing more time than you want to into it. I do want more games like this to exist though, where the focus is more artistic in trying to induce a particular experience or feeling as opposed to just making something fun. Additionally, the game is too long now with 2.0. I think 3 years was just about right before.
6/10
Overall I recommend this game, but only with discount.
Gameplay is fine, atmosphere is glooming. First 3 game years are fun, but last 2 are long-drawn and boring.
Achievements are exhausting since you have to finish the game over and over again.
didn't like it
It's a fun little relaxing game where your murder people for your beloved god beneath the waves.
What more do you want?
This game made me realize I fail at the simple task of murdering people
