We use the word feel to describe the effect we are striving towards with Kodon. This word describes speed, intuitivity, inspiration and enjoyment. We support all Meta/Oculus headsets, the mainstream SteamVR based (Vive, Index), and WMR sets (HP Reverb, WMR). We also try to get more rare headsets working. Contact us on Discord and help us make your headset work!
Kodon innovated the "hybrid workflow". By adding desktop workflow, we allow you to switch effortlessly between immersion and overview, and between free-drawing and flat ("planar") approaches to your work. We want to be fully competitive with the existing desktop alternatives for asset creation,
Visit our Discord chat and tell us what works, what doesn't, and what you want to see in the future for Kodon.

VR system: I'm using Index controllers and an old HTC Vive headset.
The latest two updates - after a year of silence from the developers - has improved the interface. It's still a bit quirky but is much easier and clearer to work with than with earlier versions. It also loaded all the geometry of almost all the OBJ and FBX files I threw at it, only choking on a enormous OBJ with several million faces.
Actually working in VR was less enjoyable. In less than fifteen minutes I managed to lock the tutorial three times in three different ways - it apparently stopped reading the menu button, the trigger, and the grip on the primary controller at different times, requiring that I leave VR and close Kodon from the desktop. Each time the controller worked flawlessly once out of Kodon. I never did get very far in the tutorial due to this.
I spent anther fifteen or twenty minutes playing around, sculpting on the provided base meshes. Performance was acceptable, but buttons in the dialog boxes wouldn't always load their labels; you had to remember which was which. Finally Kodon stopped recognizing the menu button again, and I shut it down.
I spent another hour or so after that in VR, in various programs, with no controller issues.
The 20 Dec 2024 update had an issue (everyone was set to "trial version") that was corrected by another update the next day. That issue was quickly resolved, and I only mention it here because it may be mentioned in other reviews.
Kodon is a great concept that's hobbled by an inconstant, buggy implementation.
I cannot recommend Kodon as it stands presently. I do have hope that it will improve.
URGENT NOTE: There was an update on December 20th 2024 that made the steam version have the text "trial version" across the screen and some features removed The developers fixed the trial mode thing now. If you are seeing "Trial" text over your program you may need to uninstall it and reinstall it. Verifying the download may also fix it.
The bad:
It crashes often and randomly, totally unstable, save often, if it saves.
The program has not seen updates in all of 2024
The developers are not active in the discord
There was an update on December 20th 2024 that made the steam version become a trial version. This is probably a mistake and will be fixed, and you can still access the full version from the versions listed in the beta section.
The good:
The program is very promising, and when it works it is quite a joy to use. when it was released a year ago the developers were quite active and the development seemed to go quite well.
If you have the money to spare or find it in an offer by all means get it.
If you want it to use it as a tool for work, then probably wait and see if it ever gets updated before putting money into this one.
I will change my recommendation to positive if the trial version is fixed and there are updates.
As it was fixed, this review is now positive.
best vr sculpting application by far, practically zbrush in virtual space. unfortunately its no longer in active development, but even in the state its currently in it is a masterpiece.
really buggy
Doesn't launch in VR
Funciona en modo escritorio desde GnuLinux, lo probé en un Manjaro XFCE.
Not even an hour in and I'm already loving this. Sculpting in VR is so satisfying. The UI is very intuitive, especially if you already have some experience with 3d modeling software. It's going to completely change my workflow for the better and I really hope the devs come back to polish it up a bit more.
Buggy as, couldn't save, couldn't import, couldn't export, couldn't use stamps
Abandonware, there are a few bugs that can break the whole experience. i would not want to contribute to developers who abandoned something in the state this is in. if it was for the most part functional before being abandoned i would not have refunded. even at a -70% discount its not worth it
Its dead program
Please fix your software, its a miracle to have a file load, let alone save the file, this is a very intuitive modeling program, but its useless if it breaks at crucial moments
Get ShapeLab instead, this project doesn't see updates.
I don't know what a lot of these gripes and things are talking about. I have had the UI glitch before in the HMD but you can save on the Desktop, which I did, then restart the OXR instance and it cleared up. That only happened once to me in Kodon but it isn't unique to this program, occasionally tracking gets borked. That's just where we're at with VR right now. I use a Meta Quest 3 and an Index and they both launch kodon just fine, never had an issue with the launch one time. I haven't used this program excessively but I have used it enough that I can vouch for the stability (5.3 hours is inaccurate - not sure why but that is literally a fraction of the actual time.
Also not sure why someone said no trigger pressure in the program? I am pretty sure there is.. I'm going to have to open it and check; either way, trigger pressure is a sketchy function to use imo, even if you have a very steady trigger finger. I greatly prefer to find a happy mid-level Strength setting and set it to either movement or frequency, Much easier to control imo but to each their own.
One thing I LOVE about Kodon is the import / export versatility. It isn't some master skeleton key or anything but I can use it as an intermediary between DAZ, Substance, Blender, Hexagon, Modo, Zbrush, Houdini and VUE: USD, OBJ and FBX compatible.
I like Kodon. The price is very reasonable compared to other 3d modeling and sculpting options. Yes blender is free, but you can't sculpt in VR, you can only scale primitives and walk around a scene. Most competitive products are in the 200-500$ range AND require a subscription. This is one and done.
It is not a perfect platform but I find it useful and I think, for the price especially, it is a great tool for anyone to add to their suite. ESPECIALLY considering that there is no subscription. Everything is moving to subscription models anymore, which particularly sucks when there is still a large upfront purchase price, in addition. I.E. 500$ purchase and 300$ annual if you pay one off or 50$ a month (Adobe for instance),
Don't forget there is a swath of tools on the desktop viewport that are inaccessible through the HMD and some things are still just easier to manipulate with a mouse and keyboard.
TLDR;
I like it.
I recommend it to anyone, but i suppose
particularly for someone starting out in 3d sculpting/modeling:
low cost, once, upfront. The price of a AAA game, once, for life.
Wide compatibility with other common programs.
The program has never not worked for me: on Index or via Steam Link on a MetaQuest 3 by both AirLink and by Cable
I used this software a couple of years ago when it was earlier in the development. I really enjoyed it then. I came back to it today because I needed to sculpt some new things for an upcoming board game idea. I really enjoyed seeing all of the changes that were made in the last couple of years. There have been several quality of life updates and seems to be some stability fixes too recently. The controls in this software feel very very natural. It did not take me long at all to dive back in. Great job devs!
Unfortunately I would've loved to have recommended this software but according to the discord, the project is literally indefinitely on hold.
No pressure sensitivity in the trigger... so this is useless compared to zbrush. Kingspray VR has this, so i know it's possible, you just didn't include one of the most important features of a 3D sculpt software..
Nice, intuitive and fun... Only one big minor point: the saving is not always perfectly stable
