It's an old game but a fun one. I played the disc version when I first got a computer, still enjoyed myself.
This is a really beautiful game that I purchased on disc in 1998, shortly after it came out. I loved it then playing hundreds of hours and when it came out on steam, I still felt the magic of it. It is such a rich game but the maps will feel a bit small by modern standards.
8/10
I enjoy it, its cheap. You might too
When is remake? Of all the $h1t @$$ games being remade how has no one picked up this gem?
It's old but still fun.
I played this for the first time in 2024 so the following review is not biased by any nostalgia for the game. However, it is biased by a fondness for retro games and the fantasy genre. If you enjoy retro fantasy games like myself, then this game is for you. Lords of Magic is an easy to learn, turn based strategy game with real time combat in which you develop your buildings, build up your army, and go out to conquer your enemies while exploring the world of Urak. The artwork and audio is stereotypical of the dark, ominous portrayal in which fantasy was represented to audiences of the 70's and 80's which creates a wonderful ambience to the game. The artwork is particularly reminiscent of the Heavy Metal franchise if you are familiar with that reference. Unfortunately, the gameplay is quite shallow. After one playthrough, there is not much more to experience. Nonetheless, I can see myself coming back in a year or so to relive the joy of playing this game. But even if I never play it again, I definitely got my money's worth as it currently costs less than a cup of coffee. Gameplay tip: the pause feature is one of the greatest tactical advantages you will have in every fight.
Just a really fun, but challenging game
This game was one of my earliest favourites, and I couldn't help picking it up again after I saw it for sale in the shop. I'm very pleased that my nostalgia was justified and that it's still a lot of fun.
Lords of Magic is a turn-based strategy game, set in a fantasy setting, where your chosen Lord vies for control over the map against seven AI controlled opponents, each ruling their own unique faction.
This means a lot of replay value as you can choose to play as each of the eight different "faiths", all of which have different strengths and weaknesses.
You level your champions and units by sending them to fight against your opponents and the countless neutral strongholds dotting the map. The main win condition is to defeat Balkoth, the Lord of Death.
A few gripes:-
I often found that my most difficult fights (hardest difficulty) were at the start of a new campaign, when your army is fragile and you have to protect and level a limited amount of units until your forces are strong enough to liberate your temple. It is important to note that a faction is defeated when their Lord dies, so care is necessary when using them in battle.
Defeating the opposing AI is actually quite easy, especially later in a campaign. The AI will even sometimes suicide themselves against trash mobs before I was even capable of invading. The poor Chaos Lord AI is especially bad and almost never gets out of the early game.
My main goal during a play-through was rather to defeat all the neutral mobs guarding the most difficult strongholds.
Despite the few drawbacks and dated graphics, I've still enjoyed many a play-through since my rediscovery.
A timeless game. Incredible still after 20 years...
"There's only ONE Lord of Life and he doesn't ride a dinosaur!" - my fundie cousins if they found out about this game.
An excellent strategy game with it's own deep lore. If only we could figure out how to update the graphics!
I used to love playing this game, super fun RTS.
d(o,o)b
This strategy turn-based builder game is what I consider the pinnacle of the Lords of the Realm series.
The interface is bulky, and some aspects are redundant once you encounter a new aspect, but it is a game from the mid 90's. This game was built to last, and has lost very little of it's charm. Especially considering the fact that it is a game released bug-free.
an interesting classic
Old school graphics, but the sounds effects, game play and strategy are still a lot of fun!
Ai isn't always the smartest but it's worthwhile for its era IMO. But I do have rose tinted glasses on.
Best retro game ever for RTS
I still have the CD in my basement; however bought this anyway because of such memories associated with it. While it didn't age very well, when you stumbled across this game long ago, it set a certain standard and unusual game mechanic around strategy games that it was in the range of revolutionary. And a reason I held onto the CD.
Amazing game old and fun
One of my favorite games that I enjoyed playing in the late 90s, I still have the CD, but my desktop PC has been dead for a few years. I'm so happy to add this fine game to my Steam library on my laptop.
Lords of Magic has a great fantasy story with different factions whose powers are based on religions rooted in themes of the four elements, nature, chaos, order, life, and death. Each faction must liberate their Great Temple to open up ownership of a capital.
You can either micromanage battles or let the computer handle them. Scattered around the map are houses, manors, statues, and caves of various levels to investigate inhabited by bands of vagabonds and brigands to clear out. There are also roving bands of marauders to keep you on your toes.
The graphics are very nice, quite colorful and well done for the time the game was made in. I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that LOM was one of the best fantasy empire building games of the 1990s.
reminiscent of old days when I was younger
