Last Days of Old Earth is a turn-based strategy game set in a far future world where the sun is dying. The remnants of humanity must migrate once a generation towards the equator where it is still warm enough to sustain life.
Last Days of Old Earth invites you to become the leader of the human Skywatchers or the robotic Automata, two fundamentally opposed factions. In a hostile environment, where natural resources are almost depleted, you must fight your way to survive for one more turn. With scarcity goes rivalry, and only the law of the wild applies in this icy and desolate world.

The games systems are well done and the cards/units are interesting enough but the campaign is poorly written and missions not very interesting. The AI is also poor so skirmish mode is not fun.
So many of the mechanics revolve around dice rolls - and there is no way it is actually RNG. Three straight hours of nothing but bad rolls. When you get 1 out of 7 or 1 out of 9 SIX TIMES in a row after THREE hours of getting 0s and 1s (out of 4-6 dice usually) for 90% of your rolls its fairly obvious the difficulty is being artificially inflated somewhere in the programming. Its one thing to add elements of random chance to a strategy game - its another thing to take all the strategy out of a STRATEGY game by tilting the "odds" so far against you.
I wanted to recommend it - it's a nice little puzzly strategy game, lacking only in polish: it's incredibly slow. For example, even if there's no damage done in an attack, you still have to watch the little "I'm attacking" animation and listen to the "pew pew" sound. But when it crashes during the middle of an AI turn and loses data from a scenario not ironically named a "Grind", I sadly have to give it the big frowny face.
This game is frustrating and boring.
They tried to make a modern Armageddon Empires, which is a great idea, but failed miserably. The devs removed the good things (unique units, scarcity, hand-drawn artwork). The hand drawn art feel of AE was replaced by bland and sad looking 3D graphics. Each unit looks the same.
I see their goal was to make the game more "accessible" by adding a campaing mode. But the downside to "accessible" is there is not a lot you can do. Th first campaign map takes ages to conquer, without any content. Each turn is the same. If you don't like the campaign, you can enter skirmish mode, but with only two factions. In fact, they feel and look so similar that you won't notice a difference.
They also tried to make the UI better, with some success, but they clung to the the mindless click-through die rolling screen, which are void of any meaningful decisions. Also the screens are very clumsy, you have to open an army info screen, then open the unit info screen to see what skills a unit has.
Finally, there are constant delays hindering the game flow. You wait for your turn (AI takes ages), you wait for die rolls, you wait during combat...

Very slow AI turns --- minutes on my machine, so games take forever.
But otherwise like the game.
I really like this game, it reminds me of an old card-based one called Scrolls. I really like that you can engage in battles individually, in additon to all the regular turn-based strategy. It's a great combination, and the tutorial gives you a great start. Love the setting, look n feel, and music too!
Pros:
I love the game concept. It bridges a lot of aspects I like: CCG's, RPG elements, strategy, ect.
Combat (when it works correctly) is an enjoyable experience.
Visuals and sound meet what I expect from a game in this category.
Cons:
Bugs. A lot of them. What did it in for me was several game freezes in a row. Add in my auto-save not working well, and I'm out a few hours. I'm currently locked into only the second campaign mission because of the game locking and issues with saving.
I'm frustrated because I don't feel that I can get far enough into the game to test the complexities and strategies of the combat system.
An extremely simplistic game with almost no content. This is not a 4X strategy game, just a crude card game. I experienced a critical error that meant I couldn't continue the session on my first playthrough.
Spend your time and money elsewhere.

I found all the same issues and I had an additional bug where enemies would take double turns on movement, completely broke the game when playing skirmish. Basically the enemy would take two movement turns, always capturing your outposts and supply spots. Then if you tried to attack them, they'd retreat from battle (in my limited experience they got away 100% of the time) and then take another move turn outside where you could attack them on your next turn. Beyond frustrating.
I was actually surprised to see that the game ran well on what I lovingly call my "craptop" comptuer (basic 4core with integrated graphics), despite the system requirements asking for much more. There are some positives to the game and I like the card/draw feature, but with only two races to play and my above bug (and the others that show up randomly), it's broken on gameplay. And that, to me, just isn't worth it.

This is a turn based strategy game that works at two levels. Most of your time will be driven on the world map where cards determine the units you can put in play. There is a little mechanic where you decide whether to spend resources you need to bring cards to try and get more action points to use them (but if your AI opponent spends more you lose them). This strategy layer is well designed but unfortunately suffers from increasingly long wait times for the AI on larger maps. The second layer is a pretty basic turn based tactics section where units lined in two rows attack each other. This gets boring pretty quickly with few decions to make. The graphics at this level are also somewhat lacklustre compared with the world maplayer which is simple but has a certain style. Sound is OK. As others have said though the real killer is lack of content; the campaign is short, wrapped in a weak narrative that drip feeds you new cards/units until the final maps. Ultimately I gave up as the game was frsutratingly slow re AI waits and there just wasn't the scenario or card variety to keep me coming back. Not recommended due to price/better games out there to spend your time on. Eador Imperium for example gives you a ton more content and is much more involving.
Buggy.
1) Sometimes fonts become mangled and unreadable
2) Had enemy phantom units that you could not attack, could move onto the same space as them, then they disappear. When you move off the space again the unit is there again
The game is very similar to Armageddon Empires, that I liked, but it feels simpler and less polished. Things that you can forgive to a year 2007 title are much harder to forgive to a year 2016 title. The game has less factions, less cards, less options. Of course, it's much prettier, but unfortunately AI is as slow or even slower than in Armageddon Empires.
The mop-up is excruciating. There is a mission when you need to get a guy from point A to point B. If you defeat the machines first, then you need to spend another 10+ turns just moving the guy, since it can’t move faster than a few tiles a turn. You already won, but the game won’t register it until you actually hand-hold the guy to the base.
All in all, a lot of potential, but unfortunately not fulfilled.
I'm still early in the SP campaign, but it's interesting enough I'll give it a thumbs up. The action point system is quite good, making sure that even if you've got a substantial lead (or deficit) you're fairly limited on how much you can activate.
The battles are quite good. The balance of forces and special unit powers definitely reward planning.
However, it has some major flaws. Even on Hard, the AI does ridiculously stupid things. Not "oh, bad strategy", but "Oh my god" things. For example, I have zero fate points, I roll zero hits, but the AI still maxes out it's defense throwing away it's fate points.
And the game economy isn't great. There's no maintenance costs, so you can put out your entire army. There's no real reason not to spend as quickly as you can. Even guys sitting as garrison are better than guys sitting in your hand. Now, because of the action point system, scattering your forces is a bad idea so there is some thought there.
The 4x aspect is a bit weak because of the lack of any real economic considerations. So far, the SP campaign is more like Disciples, more of a set series of battles than a more open ended 4x.
Only my second review, but I own a lot of different games, many from Matrix, HPS, others. What I like about this game is it has a little bit of everything - old-school hex based strategy, TBS tactical combat with interesting units, deck building, random card drawing, and now a campaign.
My main wish is a DLC loaded with more (larger) maps. It could add to bottom line and keep game in the limelight.
Later at night, when I just can't deal with a monster game, this one relaxes me while offering a reasonable challenge and complexity that doesn't make your head hurt...
But now it's been 17 hours of play, which is a lot for a fast-moving game like this. The game needs larger maps and more content, and IMO would only be worth buying on a 50% sale. Building decks sounds cool, but I keep getting repeat cards in my game, so don't really see the impact of this feature. Everything else is very simple, including the combat.
This game has some potential, I know have only just started, but it was very easy to get into. Played through the tutorial which maybe should be expanded a bit more, that or they need to get a cut of the manual out there as some of the features I am not totally sure of at this point. The campaign I stareted was pretty easy to get into, with the cards and random dice roll I get a sense of the old style games I loved from SPI and Avalon Hill back in the day. Will have to see how it goes over the next few weeks as it marches towards release. But so far I will say thumbs up.
This game is a lot of fun, especially since I am into collectible card games
Learning curve takes a while and I am still trying to figure things out but I am charging ahead. Any negative reviews of this game are probably people that just can't figure out what is going on
Gameplay has been seamless which is not always the case for early access games.
I think it is worth the money and would recommend to anyone.
I will just start right off by saying i recommend this title. It has an interesting art style, it has a nice mix of turn based strategy rules along with card drawing to pick your hero and warrior units. It is easy to learn and fun to play.
I personally have not run into any bugs as of the time of writing this short review. The only down side at this point
in the games development is that there are not any difficulty levels to pick from. I do suggest to the devs that the
game would benefit to have a range of easy to very difficult in order to allow all types of skill levels to enjoy what promises to be a great game. Bottom line at this time is that we have here a strategy game worth playing, but a little on the easy side at the moment. I am happy to be a part of playing this one as it grows. Thumbs up.
Last Days of Old Earth is an extremely fun game. It has a great tempo--turns are fairly quick even into late game.There are small decisions (whether to spend your action points on moving a unit/card on the map or bring a new unit/card onto the map, how much resources to gamble at the start of each turn for more action points, when and where to create armies) and big decisions (when and where to build outposts to extend your supply lines and when and where to commit your army to battle). The art style and music work well to evoke a convincly bleak future-world. I am looking forward to the new content and updates. Great job by the devs--this is clearly a labor of love for them.
Very polished for a EA title. Appears (except for lack of campaign) to be pretty much feature complete. One thing it really could use is a manual (it will have one upon completion). Without a manual or tooltips there are some things that I have no idea what they do. I really think that one thing that the game is going to need down the road to hold a player's interest is a third faction (maybe as DLC or expansion), Overall it gets a big "thumbs up" and it can be enjoyed in its current EA state.
This game has amazing potential, so far it has a Tutorial and a Skirmish, with a decent enough level of options for a game that just entered Early Access. I have seen many early access games offering less than this.
Whats even more important is they are releasing what looks like a solid roadmap for the game, which looks like a strict Early Access period unlike so many other Early Access games.
Gameplay is very very solid and addictive, and it is reminiscent of its inspiration: Armageddon Empires. I'm very pleased with my purchase.
My personal hopes is to get a Mutant Race and an Alien race into the game, so that it feels 100% a spiritual successor to Armageddon Empires!
