The power of procedural creation :
Grand designer allows you to create an infinity of planets, nebulae, asteroids thanks to the power of procedural noises. Using the power of your DX11 GPU, every parameter changes can be seen in realtime.Controlled chaos :
Create complex ground structures by using one of the thirteen noise generators, like :- Perlin
- Voronoi
- Multifractals
- Billow
- Hyperfractals
- Exponential
Combine the basic noise layer with a secondary and a tertiary noise layer and procedurally generated craters. Those extra details will beef up the complexity and the richness of the ground of your planet.
Natural features :
Boost your productions by adding natural details like :- oceans - and tune water height, density, colors ...
- ice caps - and tune ice expansion, randomness, transitions smoothness, minimal and maximal level ...
- desert regions - and tune desert spread, randomness, edge sharpness ...
- clouds - and tune clouds shape, coverage, coloring, coriolis effect, twirls intensity and much more.
Colorize the world :
Create endless variations of your worlds by using the intuitive color ramps editor. Store presets by categories and recall them whenever you want, it's that easy.Make multiple color variations easily with the adjustment tab.
Fill the void :
Set a background for your planet by rendering volumetric nebulae in no time, tuning stars color, density and intensity.Export :
Export the textures in png, tga, dds and tiff with a resolution up to 4k x 2k with up to 4 samples per pixel in the regular version and up to 16k x 8k with 64 samples per pixel in the pro version (see version comparison). Have access to all individual layers like :- albedo
- roughness
- ambient occlusion
- normal map
- sky color and alpha
- slopes
- curvature
Export also the terrain geometry and reduce its complexity to make it usable in realtime.
All the assets can be used in your favorite engine or renderer like : Unreal engine 4, Unity 5, Maya, 3DS max, Blender, Marmoset toolbag, Sketchfab and more ...
Render still images and still-image sequences:
You can render very large images thanks to the snapshot system, up to 30k x 20k resolution with the Pro DLC. And also, sequences of images where you're animating the different planet and background parameters. You should consider buying the pro DLC of grand designer if you plan to use it for advanced usages or if you want to ouput large and high quality textures. See the differences in the following table :
Note that this software requires a directX11 graphic card to run and windows vista or above, in case of doubt, don't hesitate to ask.

Very fun game, interesting to see the different kinds of planets and celestial objects you can create.
Grand Designer Pro is an exceptional tool for creating terrains and planets. Its versatility, user-friendly interface, attention to detail, and powerful rendering capabilities make it an indispensable asset for both beginners and experienced artists alike. If you are looking to elevate your terrain and planetary design, I highly recommend giving Grand Designer Pro a try. It is a game-changer in every sense of the word.
Every time I tried to export the planet no files were generated.
I thought one could increase the details' resolutions. Despite bigger texture sizes, planets look blurry and unusable for anything serious.
I asked Steam for a refund and was denied because I spent more than 2h (3h 50min) "playing the game". What an absurd, this software doesn't work as expected (no export/bad quality) and I have to keep it?
Also, If you have a 4K monitor, expect small and blurry fonts.
A pretty good software but beware its not very good for KSP modding
It's better suited to producing cartoony, exaggerated planets, but if you have patience and an eye for subtlety you can tweak the settings to produce some very convincing results.
I bought this thinking it may fast track things but instead I lost a full days worth of work. I am a graphic designer and if you buy this and mess around with the first five or so tutorials you have now spent about five hours. I am not sure if I will get a refund but I asked for one. I spent all this time learning this, what I thought was a great short cut. Made this wonderful planet just the way I wanted. Shut down for the day and came back the next day to find out save preset does not work. There is no way to save anything. The saves get lost. On top of that it just randomly dumps presets, saves, png for animation, and so forth all into one folder that you later have to go and search through. This was such a great idea, to bad it doesn't work right.
The software is not being kept up to date, there are many bugs, the most annoying one is not being able to load your own planets.
The textures look really noisy even at an 8K reolution, the fractal maps are blurry.
Overally i feel like i've wasted 80$ on this software.
Great piece of software overall. I don't like the dithering feature as-is.
Some feature ideas for future updates:
1. Viewport-only TXAA or multisample option for dithering. It should be off for snapshots.
2. Global option to turn off dithering.
3. Improve UE4's atmospheric scattering shader to match closer to Grand Designer's one, or provide more options in the UE4 sample.
4. Custom material texture maps: custom colour-coded materials.
5. Bit more documentation on how the various cloud / atmospheric scattering techniques work would be good for those of us trying to reproduce similar results in an external engine.
6. Mesh decimation preview; right now you'd have to continuously repeatedly export to see what it looks like. Could always use external decimation program on top, so not a big deal. Also LOD options would be more convenient.
7. More emissive options would be great; emissive land, emissive sand, emissive clouds even! Totally unrealistic but might be good for more stylistic exaggerated art styles.
8. Alternative UV mappings? Lat-long is great but can run into warp issues at poles.
9. HDR colour selection; while exported values should probably be srgb unorm, intermediate values can totally be unclamped. HDR viewport with tonemap option would also be good.
OMFG!!!
This new update (1.2.0) implements everything I wanted from the start. I bought Grand Designer some time ago and was already satisfied with its features. I have made some really beautiful assets with this software, first using the vanilla version, and after a while using the PRO version (16k textures give me great pleasure). But NOW....
The new "features" system is just AWESOME! Now I don't need any other program to finalize my planets, I can do everything in Grand Designer and then just export to Unity. BOOM!
Congrats, man, this software is worth every penny of its full price. No, really, I want to give you a hug right now. Can't thank you enough for creating this masterpiece.
I have been playing around with this for about 5hrs, and frankly I am still not 100% happy about using it to create planets (which was one of the reasons I bought it). The planets that I have created, don't look anywhere near as crisp as the planets I created soley in Photoshop. The way this software exports (actually just a snapshot) is something I am definately not sold on, using a render engine would be a much better way to go, especially for the kind of digital art this is will be used for.
I can see a time when crisp images can be rendered, but at this time I think I will only be using Grand Designer to create moons and asteroids.
UPDATE: After a lot of time trying to improve the output with post processing in Photoshop with little improvement, I cannot recommend this software, at least not at the asking price. The quality of output is the big let down on this software, the developer really needs to re-think the snapshot approach.
The software is OK. It generates planets, moons ,asteroids the OBJ, MTL and textures. But there is no integration with Unreal Engine. You will need to import and make your own material by hand. The samples provided can hardly reproduce the look of the software.
Therefore, there is no easy integration as described in the video. You will need to build your materials manually and you will have a hard job to achieve the look of the software.
In short, it is an object and texture generator. Only that.
UPDATE December 2024: Outdated tool, cannot recommend. Better options exist.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Somewhat limited, but not as much as it may look when you first get into it. You can make some decent stuff with this as long as you findle with it enough to learn what everything does.
I'll keep it short.
This is a software for creating planet 3d models, so if you don't need to create those - you don't need the GD.
But if you do, then you should definetely check it out. If you just try it out of the box, or see some tutorials, you may find the result models pretty dull. But don't let that fool you, it's capable of doing really amazing things! Just check the included library, it's astonishing.
Fun product and nice set of tools. Has a wide verity of export capabilities for various game engines or 3D apps and can be used as a stand alone.
It is a very useful and fast program for planet visualizations. It takes much more time to get same results with classical 3d software.
The developer is also very helpful.
There are some features I would like to see such as a layer system that you can mix an image channel with procedurals or two different procedurals for more complex results and maybe a masking system for special areas with special textures. (for instance to create an area that there are only small craters)
If you need to create lots of planets for your work I would suggest this software.
Well was easy to learn. Had a planet made and exported to lightwave 3d in about 3 minutes and that time included learning how. Nice maps and interesting. When your in the program the clouds are moving in real time. Did not see that till I zoomed in closer. This would be great for far away shots and really would need to study more for fly buys or close ups. I will update this in the future when I get some time to play some more but I like how easy it was to use the software and going to give a big thumbs up. I think if this develops it could be a spectacular plugin and lightwave should grab it.
Grand Designer is an amazing software, nowhere else have I found such a way to create planets of any kind at will. Sure, it has a little learning curve to get really good at making your planets look exactly as you want them to, but what is there in life that doesn't take some experience to get good at? Grand Designer is a great way to create planets, asteroids, and with enough practice, some pretty decent stars (however stars are really hard to get to look right since they're not the main focus of what GD is made to make) I highly reccomend Grand Designer and especially the pro version, as it is better, as to be expected from it being the "pro" version.
Absolutely stunning piece of software!
Looking forward to even more features like binary / ternary / multiple stars, extreme weather simulation (hurricanes), river networks, reflective salt flats, etc. Will we be getting these? Only time will tell...
If you want to create realistic planets and even astroids then this program really is the best. The sheer number of options for creating your planets is mind boggling and no two planets will be the same. The one complaint I do have is that you can't export your models to an FBX or UE4 format which would be preferable. On the whole though a really great tool to make unique planets quickly and simply.
First of all, this is of course not a game, but a software aimed at digital artists. It is a hidden gem though!
While I do not work as an artist professionally, I have been creating digital art since the mid 1990s, and in doing so have used a wide range of 2D and 3D applications. My main focus are space and Science-Fiction.
If am working on a texture for a planet within a space scene for instance, that usually means painting from scratch with the occasional use of my own and public domain stock photos, as well as NASA resources. That is time consuming, and while fun, not always practical.
Grand Designer eliminates two distinct disadvantages:
- It minimizes the time it takes to create a texture, and due to it's randomization features, you won't run into the problem of repeating patterns too much.
[*]When painting a 2D texture intended for use on a 3D object, you usually don't really have a full grasp of what it would look like until you have created the object, placed it in a scene, lit it, and test rendered it. While you can always tweak settings more later, Grand Designer gives you a very good idea of how the end result will look while you are still in the initial creation process.
The software is very intuitive, and especially if you have prior experience with 2D/3D software packages such as Photoshop, Vue, Lightwave, Cinema 4D, 3D Studio, and Bryce - to name a few - this will not require much, if any, learning.
Is the asking price justified? A clear 'yes' from me, and I am including the PRO edition in that. One of the main reasons is that this software allows you to generate professional level 16k textures which usually hold up even in extreme close ups. Add to that the real time creation process, time saving, and ability to easily add and remove features, $80 is more than fair. It also doesn't feel clumsy and unfinished like most Early Access titles.
If you want to expand your horizons, and add a time saver to your workflow, then look no further.
I'm not affiliated with the developer in any way; this is an independent review and my opinion.
I've only just opened this program so have a little less than an hour of use as of writing this. In this amount of time I can say that this software is great so far. The output options for textures are extensive so the uses for these texture sets go far beyond just game engines or planets.
There are a few issues on some of the rendering within the software that I can see, but nothing that has been a deal breaker for me and considering it is in pre-release, this is looking really good.
In addition, there are several sample planets and asteroids to get you started, as well as the ability to bring in custom textures. I have a middle of the road gaming machine, and previewing at full resolution will drop your fps, but there are options to work at lower quality levels and render your final textures at full res.
I am considering dropping the extra money for the pro version. I can see this program might be useful for not only planets but heightmaps for terrain generation as well. If the dev's would consider the feature of generating output textures that could tile on a flat plane, rather than sphere projections, this software could be a one stop shop for both planetary bodies and the fly through terrain to match it.
Great work! Can't wait to see the development of this.
As a hobbyist in cryengine i have been importing stuff from GD. It has a great UI is easy to use and has endless variations on what you can create . Saves so much time and effort and is enjoyable to use ,going to create a solar system for a mod with this .
Also as well as the planets you can create and export textures bumpmaps etc for nebulae and can create some good effects and meteorites and suns as well . Impressive that this was made by one person and is well worth the price for the pro addition , Also has a wide selection of export options and some good presets
From the perspective of what is available, it is great. Integration with engines other than Unity particularly UE4 is not simple and does not serve a plug & play material system. So if working with materials & textures is not already your skill set the power of this program cannot be appropriately utilized.
