It is what it says...simply chess. No distractions. Can't hear no buzzers and bells.
Nice game. Somewhat hard to see Black when they are at the top of the board though, like telling the difference between a pawn and a Bishop.
I've been wanting to learn chess properly for a long time, and so far I'm getting my ass kicked by the low level computer. Really simple, runs great on my laptop. Nothing fancy - what more could you want?
It's a good, basic game. I'm glad Steam offers it, and that it's even free. I'm admittedly a lousy player, still learning and self-taught on the computer, so I appreciate the choice in skill levels, too.
Amazing game. But it lacks more content and multiplayer options, like 1 min and 3 and 5 and 10 mins of game, not only moves, also multiplayer is glitchy, every time you create a lobby, you set launch, you have to leave and reconnect to online multiplayer and then press on your game to RESUME. It is buggy, it needs small upgrade and added bonus content.
If you like chess.com more then go there, leave this steam game alone. Of course chess.com is better for your improvement, but here we get a better graphic and music and stuff. They are both good.
Finally a game that's just, as the name states, Simply Chess. All I wanted, all I got. Very satisfied with it. :)
There appears to be a glitch. The Queen was not allowed to make a legal move. The legal squares were lmited to one square around her. Needs fixing.
if you choose to play with computer and then go back to the menu, you will spot a masonic eye in the middle of the screen...seems very mysterious to me
Could use some better UI, also the music restarts when you press Shift + Tab. Other than that it's a chess game, it does what it should.
Great Game. Good for when you want to get good at chess or just want to play something different or you just want to sit down and not play something like Call of duty and just want to play a simple game like this. GREAT i highly recommend it
Bad network, unkind interface. It should learn something from Xbox's chess games.
Good developer.
Had a nice graphics and sound, a convenient option for free chess on steam. A while ago the game stopped working on Linux (more users confirmed), so I cannot recommend it anymore. For a profesional chess player, get the paid version like Fritz or others, for free users, get some open-source chess available for linux.
Do not recommend due to no support/interest of developers in fixing bugs.
This game's music is sick and really adds to the game. Otherwise just chess really but what else did you expect -_-
game works great, played with a friend and there were no glitches, especially like the price, free
Chess is a crappy tactical turn based RPG developed by a bunch of monkeys.
Right away you'll notice Chess has no storyline. Instead, all you notice is the the White army and the Black army are fighting each other over a battlefield. Note the "a battlefield," because Chess only has one story map.
As for the actual combat, it's extremely dull. Each unit can kill another with only one hit. This means units with a real good movement ability dominate the field (more on that bellow). There aren't even any combat animations or anything that happens in combat. One unit moves on it's space and "captures" it, and the piece is removed from the game with no form of action or special effects.
Yawn.
Chess has sh𝗶tty class balance. The Queen is flat out overpowered while your actual front line units, the Pawns. can't do sh𝗶t. I think the developers were afraid that no one would use the female character so they buffed up her abilities really high but now theres no point in using any other unit.
The rest of the units suck. Rooks can only move in 4 directions, same with Bishops. Boring. Also, whats up with the Knight? It has the most bizzare combat abilities of all the units. They're retardly hard to use cause they jump around like retar𝐝s to move and attack. The devs should have named this unit Ninja, since Knights didn't jump around like that in real life.
Worst part, is the king. You see, the devs decided that if your king gets captured, you instantly lose the game. W-T-F? This wouldn't be a problem, except that he can't move for crap. Seriously, the most important unit in the game can only move 1 space a turn? Good luck keeping him alive while every other unit in the game dances around him.
Unbalanced classes, lackluster gameplay, and not to mention repetitive 1 hour+ games. Chess is not worth the time or your money. Buy Might & Magic VI or Sacrifice instead.

This is definitely my favorite version of Chess on Steam. There are quite a few players online or you can play vs AI. "Simply" put (sorry for the pun), this is a great game to get into. It's made by the guy behind Hive, Khet 2.0, and Tatsu.

3 out of 10.
Really good game for chess, but noticing only two problems one white side has the king and queen set up correctly but the other side doesnt, and when a pawn gets to the opposite side it shouldn't be allowed to become a queen when you already have your queen on the board.
Though I am not too good at chess, I am attempting to learn. With this game, it helps, and it is in a nice atmosphere. The players online are rather good, and the game itself is very welcoming. I like the layout, as you can find most if not everything rather quickly and easily. I recommend this to any chess enthusiast as well as beginner!

There is local and Internet based Multiplayer, but I have yet to try it. I just like to play the computer for some casual enjoyment. It's free with Ads, but 5$ for a basic chess game is an easily digestable price, especially since Microsoft no longer supplies basic games like this on Windows since they are greedy *$#^s.
