nearly a good quiz game.
like the idea. great voice over but with out much funny material. the timers combined with A high level of voice over skill that lack joke content soon becomes abrasive and annoying! the way the questions are written combined with the all out emphasis narration mean that its not so much the question your figuring out but what the hell he trying to say in the 1st place. so if i dont want to hear the 'right' answer where is the skip button? also the films didnt seem that relevant to me, for eg you know what my good friend jack burton always says about the eye of the storm?? open yr eyes and watch some GOOD movies, gone with the wind SUCKS and i am happy not to know shit about it or its boring friends.SKIP BUTTON!. Over all i found my answers to be, dont care or shut the hell up already!

it would be good to see these more inventive selections, it seems that they are mostly what the jibberish vs fact premise derives from, why limit the introduction to the subject matter, let us take it on before you slag us out the door with a gob barrage of pebble dash shrapnel! iam not having problems jumping out of a plane here, IAM JUST SELECTING!

you don't know jack is the best trivia game series of all time. this one is from 1997, so it's pretty outdated by now and it's always been us-centric (though with movies both are less of an issue than in other entries), so you'll either find it very challenging or very frustrating if you're from somewhere else. or a piece of cake because you know all the answers.
it's your typical multiple choice deal, but there are a ton of other question types over the series, like dis or dat (or sometimes both) or gibberish question. you can play a game of 7 or 21 questions, some question types only appear in the full run, but they both end with the jack attack. there's a clue and you have to match things accordingly.
local multiplayer is available for up to 3 players, you can even screw each other by buzzing in and forcing another player to answer. save for a few occasions way back when, I've always played it alone and always had a blast.
it's all presented as a tv show (there was an actual short-lived tv show as well, should be on youtube), there's some behind-the-scenes chatter at the beginning, fake commercials at the end (don't you dare skip them!), fake money to win and all that, and the writing is fantastic. if it was a simple text-based thing, it'd still be excellent stuff, so much creativity, but the voiceovers take it to a whole new level. lots of characters, one-off or recurring, great hosts, also one-off or recurring, and again, the whole thing is just great.
the attention to detail and variety elevates it even further. sure, if you play long enough, you'll see repeated questions (though I don't think the game will show them again until you've seen most of them), but there are a lot of different ways to introduce questions, a lot of remarks if you chose the wrong answer or hesitate to enter your name (in which case the host will give you one) or pick a category or answer, a relevant joke for most choices, right or wrong, and of course the commercials, man... the game also starts differently based on the time and date, so on certain holidays, early in the morning, late at night, on friday evening, and so on. and for answers that need typing, you can try some profanities, see what good they do.
there was nothing done to modernize the game for the steam release, so it runs in 640x480 (a very tiny window with a black background, you can set the .exe to run in that resolution or something closer and fill the screen more with the actual game), there's no steam overlay, there's only a single volume setting (it's fine in this case, though lowering it completely didn't let me raise it again until a restart) and controls aren't rebindable. each player gets a buzz hotkey scattered on the keyboard, the screw is the same for everybody, and if you play alone, no need to buzz and space works just fine for that too.
I literally don't know jack and I've been having fun with the series since it first came out, most of it played alone. if you don't mind questions about older stuff (or that's your specialty) and can handle a lower resolution, definitely pick these up.
Although still fun like the other classic YDKJ games, it is only worth getting for completion as too much of the trivia relies on obscure movie trivia. Even as someone who has seen a lot of movies, this one is quite difficult but it still has some charm along with the other classic YDKJ games.
I worked at a video store for almost a decade and like movie trivia. The difficulty level on this game is "Well above average" to "Well that's obscure".
More of a game for the generation born before 1990. The questions are all based on movies from before 1990 era. A little disappointed.
I bought this game for 1$ on sale so I really don't mind it.
However, this game does not hold up well at all, questions are pretty much blind guesses 3/4 times because of how old and random the movies are. The game doesn't even have a settings page, so your stuck watching it on a tiny little box in the middle of your screen, which there is a workaround but its not even worth the effort.
I personally think this game is dead and doesn't need to be played, it had its run when it was released but now it just doesn't compare to any of the other amazing Jackbox games.
(NOTE: You can not play this with people who aren't watching the game in person, there is no jackbox.tv compatibility.)
Yes, the references top out at 1997, yes it runs in a tiny resolution, and yes, there's no online and you have to share a keyboard, but this is the only YDKJ where I have a chance at getting most of the questions right and I'll take it. Would love if they did a movie exclusive version in a future Jackbox game.
It's not the best of the YDKJ classic games.
The questions are harder and dated. And some require details from some rather obscure films.
It still has the awesome faux game show presentation, but so do the other YDKJ games. Go with those first.
The interface is fine, the graphics are fine, its the questions that were terrible. I would have liked to see questions centered on classic films, or blockbusters, or important films. Instead you would have to know two out of three of the following: who was the star of a Doctor Pepper add from the mid seventies, what his line was, and another movie that he was in.
Quite dissappointed. Second round was played with older people ( they did just as poorly as I did)

I have always liked the "You don't know Jack" games - having played them since their first incarnation many window platforms ago. They can lose their magic a little because they follow the same formula, but it's bit like having different trivial pursuit games, enough different topics and a bit of fun to play with someone else, or by yourself.
As I am from Australia the only downside is that there is a lot of content that is not relevant or is specific to US (eg: some comedy and tv shows that may not be shown here), although if you have a good general kinowledge of movies then this is only a very minor criticism. I would like to see some Oz movies included of course. Note that I have played this game a lot more than the 2 hours it says on my steam account.
Recommended for those who have a good knowledge of movies, enjoy other "Jack" games and get on sale.

Still has all the cool stuff of the original game, still locked to 800x600. 1997, so no movies after then - only movies that are >20 years old :) at least a game can be played in under 10 minutes, though.
Similar to You Don't Know Jack Sports, this iteration of the franchise deals exclusively with Film trivia. Most of what I said in my YDKJ Sports review can be applied here, just change "sports" to "movies." Movie buffs will get the most out of this; comedy will be the saving grace for everyone else. Again, I think it would be prudent to purchase this in the bundle, and that's where my recommendation falls.

So, I liked the first few You Don't Know Jack games in my youth, and always felt that they posed interesting questions paired with good humor, even when I was younger.
I also love movies and have watched several thousand, so this should be good for me, right?
Uh, no. I've read some people's complaints on here about the interface, and they are plain wrong. It's fine, aside from not adjusting to resolutions above 1024x768, doesn't really matter.
The real problem is the obscurity of the questions.
As an example, I played a random 21 questions game, and in order to finish the game with a score above ZERO, the winning player would have to be intimately familiar with:
Our Man Flint
Reality Bites
Song of the South
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Myra Breckenridge
all of the seven dwarf's names
most titles of Jerry Lewis' filmography
and NO ONE I was playing with got a score over ZERO. So, yeah, fun game, maybe, if you're Leonard Maltin, and you're playing with Gene Shalit and Ken Jennings. But even for the average movie buff, let alone the average person, this is just silly.
Until recently (ie. Quiplash, and the party box 2), JackBox had a great formula and unique party-game style BUT there were terrible control options and they all felt like a bad port.
I'd pass on all of the older You Don't Know Jack titles and go for the more modern JackBox games that let people use mobile devices as the controllers.
Bottom line: great ideas and fun here, but terrible interface, controls, and overal wasted potential.
I love this game!! I remember playing it when it first came out and I am so excited to see that Steam has it.

This YDKJ is for the hard core movie goer. Wow, it is hard... And I watch/watched a lot of movies in my 40 years on this planet. A challenge for sure.
I would recommend only for HARD CORE MOVIE TRIVIA crazyness!
As someone who is a film maker and have a degree in film, this game is semi hard and really gets you thinking. if you love movies pick this up!
Frankly my dear... This game is classic YDKJ! I mean hell, one of the answers is "Taun-Taun gut lined gloves"
This is one of the best video game franchises in history, just because it actually requires you to know things. As in, really know them. You can't just be all "oh, I like movies" and expect to get by in this game. You have to activate your brain and fork out hard facts about really tough Hollywood jive.
Get this game if you want to both be intellectually stimulated and humiliated.
The title says it all, when you play you really do find out you don't know jack about movies. The game was obviously made quite a while ago without HD resolutions in mind and it's definitely not a game for kids with all the adult humor which was definitely a good thing in my situation. This has made a great addition to my party game line-up.
This game is really for hardcore movie buffs. I've watched probably close to 3000 movies in 3 decades but this particular YDKJ game is still quite hard. I wouldn't recommend it to a casual player, more for the super hardcore quiz / movie buffs.
On a note to the game itself, I'm pretty disappointed. There is no option to play full screen, no choice of screen resolution or similar. Looks crappy, it's a old game and to be expected. The commentator is funny for the most part but sometimes I'd rather just play than to listen to him.
Hate the fact that you always have to watch the intro which takes like a minute until you can actually play. There should be an option to skip the intro.
Verdict: Good value game for hardcore quiz (movie) buffs. Terrible integration on steam as in no achievements, no nothing, no option for screen resolution etc. The "Millionaire" games may be better suited for the casual player.
