In Nomine includes the following features:
  • New Missions Countries will now have specific missions tied to actual historical events which players may complete for bonuses. Players are not required to complete these missions; however, these features will give players who want defined goals a more structured path.
  • New Decision System World leaders will now have a better overview of the decisions needed to shape the future of their country. They will also have expanded control over the future of their countries on both the provincial and national level.
  • Rebels with a Cause Rebels with specific goals and abilities will rise to challenge players every step of the way. These 'rebels with a cause' will all have their own unique grievances and can be negotiated with or completely eradicated, at the player's discretion.
  • Religious Tolerance Religious tolerance now depends on the ideas and decisions taken by world leaders, adding a new layer of strategy. Political and religious dissidents can be handled in a number of effective ways, from excommunicating wayward rulers to organizing crusades.
 
Features included in Napoleon's Ambition:
  • Expanded Timeline The expanded timeline includes new content such as new leaders, rulers, advisor wars, countries and national ideas as well as dozens of new units for more tactical choices.
  • Historical Options With hundreds of new events, players will be able to see their rulers, leaders and advisors appear on accurate historical dates.
  • Improved Interface The new trading mode for the map displays all goods that will be produced in each respective province, including the value of the goods. This means the ledger will have more pages, including information about colonies and leaders.
  • Enhanced Trading System The new trading system will let players to automatically send merchants to specific trading centers. Players can choose the trading centers they most want to focus on, and the game will automatically take care of the necessary trading actions. This system also includes a new rule for overseas trade where players will have to use war or diplomacy to give merchants access markets.

Europa Universalis 3 (EU3) is not just its sequel (EU4) with less features as it its core mechanics are completely different. Changes like having sliders instead of idea groups to define nations, more technology groups, more tech levels, and harder to manage expansion make it a much deeper game.

Having sliders to define a country makes for a more interesting experience. In EU3 things like innovation and tradition are on a slider. Being a really innovative society improves technology, but at the cost of stability cost and being able to quickly convert people. In its sequel there is no trade-off because one can pick both an idea group that favours tech and one that favours conversion/stability. Another good example is that EU3 uses a slider system for its military so choosing between a quality army and quantity army is a meaningful decision made over the course of a game. In its EU4 one can have both an idea group for quantity and quality at the same time. There is an opportunity cost due to a limited number of idea slots, but that is not as meaningful as spending literally centuries steering one’s country towards having the greatest soldiers in the world at the cost of being only able to focus on a couple of fronts.

EU3 also does technology in a more interesting way. Perhaps the biggest difference between the two games is that EU4 has what many call the “mana system”. Over time countries get admin, diplomatic and military points based on the attributes of their leader and advisors. These points are spent on technology and upgrades. This system makes technology all about leaders, but EU3 has a more nuanced system where rich countries with good institutions have the edge on technology. In EU3 technology comes from dedicating a larger % of the economy certain research trees. It is a more active process, and a countries technological development can be interrupted if it has to invest more of its economy towards a major war. EU3 has 5 research branches for different types of technology, instead of just 3 that each have their own investment pools. This means that having a technological advantage in one area comes at the cost of other areas.

Another major difference between the two games favoring EU3 is that the earlier game does a better job at punishing expansion. Having more provinces raises the cost of technology and stability so mindlessly painting the map is more difficult. A country that has painted the map but is filled with poor undeveloped provinces will be technologically backwards. Likewise, the process of painting the map also pushes one to becoming technologically backwards as the sliders favoring conversion and stability are the ones that harm technological progress. In EU3 cultural conversion and religion conversion are based on % chances instead of mana point spending so building a large empire means dealing with ethnic minorities that cannot just be instantly evaporated away.

EU3 is still a game worth playing. It makes playing as a country more like steering a ship that has to adapt to the world around it rather than a just game of min-maxed optimization.

Game clearly did not have anyone with the ability to calculate simple math work on it. You'll win combat and the enemy gets to leave while you are stuck in some dumb fighting animation so they always get ahead of you and get the terrain advantages. Yes, you read that right. The enemy you defeated gets to leave the battlefield before your triumphant soldiers and have a defensive advantage if you pursue them. In any history book I've read never did the winning side take a time out so the enemy could walk off and receive a defensive advantage. Not so for the folks that made this game. In their brain they imagine a 10,000 on 10,000 battle with one side handily winning just standing around while the defeated enemy leisurely walks off. I am not even joking.

Whoever set up the weighting system clearly had no idea how the English language works. Maybe means 1% chance. Very unlikely means will never happen. Impossible also means will never happen. Very likely will fail more time than it succeeds. If you send a spy with an 86% chance to succeed he will consistently fail but his 36% chance to get caught will consistently succeed.

Then they spam you with rebels. For a robot it would be fine to deal with 5 or more insignificant battles. They realized how dumb of an idea it was so they made it so you could tag the units themselves to fight the rebels to remove the tedious idea they implemented into the game. Now you are probably thinking, "I know it adds nothing to the game play and isn't even fun but at least they added something to deal with it" and that is where you messed up. The same people who do not understand simple math or basic English also designed this mechanic and your soldiers form 40000 miles away will hunt rebels and not the units 2 inches away. Then you'll have rebels where you stationed that guy and he will be so far out of position he can't get back in time to defend the area he was left in. Again, for a mechanic that adds no value.

It gets even better. If the rebels spawn as a result of your own territory not being fully under control you get a neat little pop up to let you know about this waste of time mechanic and you can make sure the game isn't dumping in its pants trying to sort it out on its own. What if the rebels spawn in a neighboring country you might be thinking. Clearly they are intelligent enough to alert you to your provinces being attacked by someone else's rebels. HAHAHAHA. Not the people who made this game. They didn't have enough brain power for that. The rebels simply attack and take your province while you are none the wiser.

I have spent many hours sorting this out thinking, "I clearly need to learn the mechanics better" before finally realizing the game design is awful and the people who designed clearly did not care about anything they were doing. Like verifying in the dictionary that "very likely" does not mean fails 9 out of 10 times. Simply awful and lazy game design.
