Unfortunately i can not get the game to load after it starts and the unity screen pops up game crashes.. im running a 13900 with 64 gb ddr5 ram and rtx 4090 and totally wish i could play the game .. is there nobody who can mod and fix it so it runs please
I would be happy to recommend game if it ran.
Can feel a bit rough around the edges at times, but it's a 4x with a lot of pew pew involved. You can fight battles both in space and on the ground. Great for people who prefer to interact with other factions through "full contact diplomacy".
Bought this game back when i first seen it in a YouTube video over a little space 4X with custom ships and races. Was fun until some time around the windows 10 push for updates that resulted in the game not running for me or several others from what the reviews show. Loved the game until the DLC disabled some of the content as well as threw some of the race bonus away without modifying them to fit the then reworked balance. I have not been able to play this game for about 3 years so far and i have kinda wrote this off as a unplayable game. Buyer beware you may not be able to run on your system.
Great game, reminds me of Master of Orion series heavily!
Does not launch.
I played the first version, and it was awesome. Now... how did we get here? From 'pause,' to 'play,' to 'end of turn,' this game’s doing laps! It’s more fun when you can pause and play in real-time—when you’re not drowning in bugs. Like, you end your turn, a pop-up menu appears, and the game’s just partying in the background like it didn’t get the memo. And don’t get me started on the micromanagement. Manually explore? Manually colonize? What is this—downgrade simulator?
But let’s be real. If you love Stardrive, you’re gonna buy it anyway. Resistance is futile.
starDrive 2 was inspired by Master of Orion 2, but is very distant to be a whorty sucessor.
SD2 have many problemes.
- Bugs turning the game implayble
- A steep curve of learning, even whith a tutorial, and a strange way to assing leader to a fleet.
- Dosent seen fair in the balance of power between player and IA. Even whit a excelent starting system the IA empires can crush the player.
- The ship combat cannot be totaly contoled. Just put the shp in battle and choose its target, it will lfire and move by hinself.
There is too much atack fron monsters and pirates. There is a optin to disable, but whould be better if it was better balancead
Just go play MOO2.
Kind of a simpler "Master Of Orion". Plus RTS space battles.
The tutorial crashed on me, but everything else was perfect. Every setting on high, Ultra-widescreen supported. It just worked. Typical 4x game. It's been in my library forever, just dug it out today to pass a few hours during the hurricane.
Running in Linux Mint. (NOTE: I don't think this runs in Windows anymore... It's time to move Linux folks. No more excuses. :-) )
Game no longer works
I bought this way back when on hype and hoped it would reach a better condition after time and patches so finally went back to it... Nope. Still a horrific dissapointment.
Been playing this again recently after several years on the shelf...I bought the Sector Zero DLC way back when too...
The game is pretty much a modern copy of Master of Orion 2... It is identical in so many ways... Drayloks not Darloks as the espionage species etc...Same techs, same planet management with pops etc... And that is not a bad thing - it nails the format and feels fresh and clean in many ways.
It has a few novel features though like space being put into hexes or sectors to be explored, some extra mystery research for stuff like a leader recruitment building and the main feature being the real time combat and ship fitting - this is really quite good and allows custom builds and fairly fun to watch battles etc.
The main issue is the game was abandoned - the dev 'cashed out' and left the game with many many bugs to go work in a real estate job. Quite sad really because if all the bugs were fixed it'd be a true successor to MoO2.
But we're talking some major bugs that cause crashes/screen flashes/freezes... and many minor ones like the AI simply ignoring your borders to attack any minor race planets in your territory, ships randomly duplicating at end turn etc.
I checked back in hoping some modders would have patched or improved and fixed this game but sadly no modders seem to care enough and they seem to stick to Stardrive 1 which enjoys quite a bit of modded love.
In short if you like MoO2 then you'll probably really like this... its functional enough even with the bugs - has some lovely art and music and the timeless gameplay of MoO2. I'd say it's worth $5 and no more - but I'd completely understand people who don't want to support a developer who abandons multiple projects leaving them in a poor state.
However I have to give the basic game a Thumbs Up review. It is very good.... much better than many other space 4x games for the equivalent price.... even with the bugs.

To the dev: If you've moved on and changed career - good for you - but please make the full game code open source and free - you'd probably still get 'contributions' if you left a patreon or something, and this might allow others to easily take this project on further, fix the bugs and breathe new life into Stardrive 2.
