An oldie but a goodie, simple and rewarding to play.
game
As a fan of the board game this is a great alternative.
I am so bad at this game but I love it.
While I enjoy the game a lot, it needs to be remembered that the games was designed to be 2 player - 1 vs 1. If you aren't losing a lot, then the game is doing something fundamentally wrong.
I'm not losing a lot.
I used to play the Genestealers vs my friend who played Marines and we where more or less evens on even some of the ealier missions, and the AI is just not that good.
I wish there was a "Genestealer" campaign as well.
This game "Space Hulk" (2013) is very close to the classic board game. It has good graphics, great sound and plenty of campaign-based missions especially if DLC is installed. Missions are generally finishable in one session. The basic unit types and rules make each map a clever puzzle to solve with the random element there to help or hurt.
Too bad "Space Hulk" and its follow-up "Space Hulk Ascension" are no longer being sold on Steam. A more modern version, "Space Hulk Tactics" (2018) is available:

A fairly faithful recreation of Space Hulk the board game. This makes it both a game that is true to its aim but also not a great use of your time as the game rules are heavily based on RNG and less on player agency.
I'm not really a big enough fan of the 40K universe or this game in particular to persist with it.
I really wanted to like this game cos I enjoyed Space Hulk as a kid but I think maybe the combination of the fact that the base game lacks depth + the digital implementation isn't all that amazing means this is a thumbs down.
Positives:
I like 40k and this felt fairly faithful to the original Space Hulk so some nostalgia there
I didn't run into any "game breaking" bugs or anything
The missions are OK
Negatives
I think that looking back at it now, Space Hulk is definitely one of the more limited 40k games (going back to the original board games) and correspondingly I think there is a lack of variation in the digital game as all the maps are narrow corridors and small rooms.
Some things just don't really make sense when you think about them I mean why would a significant number of the marines carry close combat weapons only - it seems pretty clear to me that a marine with a bolter on overwatch in the right position is so much more effective. Like I'm struggling on a mission where I start with around 8 marines, of whom 2 don't have bolters, and I'm just thinking if only you guys brought your guns....
The difficulty of the missions was hugely variable - within the same part of the campaign, would get 1 which was really easy and the next would be really tough
I don't like that in some cases mission difficulty felt quite heavily related to specific starting position on the map - if you start in a spot where you can easily park a marine on the main approaches, you're laughing already. If not, you're in trouble.
There's a lot of luck, particularly when you are in a situation where you have 1 marine covering each approach and some of them only have a fairly short corridor or field of view, so basically if one of them gets pretty unlucky then you've got a genestealer at the back of your other marines who are going to have to use a bunch of APs to turn around and try to deal with it
The AI has no intelligence - like the genestealers dont build up their numbers to rush you, they just dash straight in and of course 1 genestealer rushing 1 marine on overwatch down a long corridor only has 1 winner. So beating the AI really just comes down to being able to get your marines with bolters in the right spots on overwatch and the AI will just kill itself from that point on.
There's no reminder for overwatch as far as I could see so each turn you need to remember to put each defensive marine on overwatch which of course is pretty frustrating if you miss one (or more) and get rushed. A reminder or some kind of auto-overwatch (if the unit has enough AP) would have been useful.
Neutral
There is some background story but it's not hugely gripping
Overall
Yeah just not enough in this game to keep me interested...it's not bad, but it's just not good enough to play through some decent length campaigns.
Terrible controls, and rng only works in the AI's favor,
Игры похожие на Space Hulk
