This is a neutral recommendation. I personally didn't vibe with this experience at all. It's about a 30 minute, experimental, artistic music video for VR with mostly gaze-based interactions. While you can play this seated, it is better played standing with some room to move as you will be looking around 360 for some of the gaze-based interactions where you do have to look at a specific spot.
The music is mostly electronic, synthesizer based music. The art is pretty minimalistic with mostly simple shapes and patterns to the few objects on screen with mostly basic colors. The music also has simple beats. The art didn't really speak to me. However, it seems others enjoyed this more than I did based on the Steam reviews. However, it does feel like this was an unfinished experience and this was just the start of a much bigger intended experience that never came to fruition.
Game is running on the Unreal Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 90 fps. There were no settings available. I did not experience any serious issues or bugs.
Overall, I did not enjoy this at all. I didn't really see the artistic merit myself. I think the gaze-based interactions are now very dated for 2022 VR. However, art & music are very subjective. You may enjoy this more than I did.
Rate 5/10.

all i get is some random terrible very loud noise that just wont stop and has possibly damaged my speakers. please refund me as this is unplayable and bad for my system.
Aesthetically cohesive introduction to an audio-visual adventure. I can appreciate that for some, $10 may be a bit pricey considering it's an 'introduction', but I am very glad I bought this (on sale for $6)! What's here is already a really wonderful and unique experience, immersive and appealing.
Sound, music, visuals all are really excellent. While this is just an 'introduction', it is a completed introduction that shows polish and care and vision. It engaged me in its 'synthesis universe'.
There's also a neat 'meditation room' included, it's nothing mind-blowing but I could see it being used as a pleasant space to just sit sometimes, or perhaps use something like OVRDrop to get work done while sitting in this space.
Yeah it's relatively short. But I highly recommend it!
I found the dev has a twitter too, it's clear they are working away at Episode 01 (https://twitter.com/OlivierJT_SU)
15 minutes of mostly cinematic musical VR experience with very little substance. Feels more like a demo for a future product.
It has clean low-poly visuals synced with music, but there is nothing interesting or memorable to look at. Seriously, I've just watched it about 10 minutes ago and I already can barely remember what was happening there)
A truly beautiful experience. The detail and the complexity of everything around you is so amazing, and the music makes it all come alive. Lots of genuine "wow" moments.
I can't wait for what's next in this universe.
Edit:
One tip for players is to look up in the "menu" area. I think you need to view the main story part first to unlock them, but there are three pentagonal flower shapes above you to the left and right that open up and take you to other scenes/modes. I had no idea until I read the store page that mentioned the added scenes. Anyway, I was very happy to discover this.
The blend of music and visuals creates a trippy experience. The ending especially is great, and one moment in particular in the middle made me visually mind-blown.
A super polished VR experience with fantastic visuals and music. It's more of an art experience than a game and on the shorter end of things but the overarching quality makes it worth checking out. Highly recommended for anyone who cares about polish, awesome tightly sync'd visuals & music, and/or develops VR. We need more polished, uniquely VR experiences like Synthesis out there
Wow, this is what indie development is all about! It's clear that a lot of thought has gone into it's development and that the dev has worked hard to create an experience that is absolutely unique.
The flow of this first episode reminds me of an indie film or music video, gracefully extended with well-integrated and stylistically matched VR mechanics and VFX. I liked that the experience is packed with innovations and attention to detail. For example, the gaze-directed controls enter your perception seamlessly and feel very natural. It's also worth noting how the point of view helps draw attention to details, surround the viewer or, cleverly, provide an out-of-body view of a remote scene. These director choices are effective and selected perfectly for the mood of each scene.
I'm looking forward to seeing where Synthesis Universe goes in EP 01.
It took me a minute or two to figure out that action was progressed using gaze only. But I once I got the hang of things, It was a sexy bloomtastic experience!
It's like if Tron Bikes met that crystal enemy from Evangelian while playing Electrosynthetic music.
Very cool! If you're wondering what exactly this experience is, if you liked Surge then you may like this as well although it's still a very different animal. It's a semi-interactive musical experience that's oozing with style. It's got polished visuals, great music, and it just super weird (in a good way). It appears to be setting up for episodic content to be released later on as it gives a an intriguing preview of what's to come at the end of this experience. Looking forward to more!
I would call this an interactive immersive VR music experience. I felt like I was stepping into an art installation from the future with a dose of nostalgia reminiscent of Tron with a gorgeous glowing pallete of neon, sci-fi vibe and a classic synth soundtrack that fully takes advantage of awesome Index speakers. I immediately appreciated that it was built to take advantage of gaze and physical position of the user...making this a true VR experience. To even progress requires the understanding of this. I gotta say that I spent a good 10 minutes with grin on my face playing with the audio which would change as I slowed and sped up time via the positioning of my body. You can tell a lot of love went into this. With the title 'Episode 00' I was a expecting this to be a sort of intro to a greater story so was ok with the shorter length which provided a welcomed trip into an interesting world of sight and sound. Sidenote....bump this baby up to 120/144hz if you can.
Very pretty and out of the box experience ! It's not a game, not long if you rush it but let it take some time to work on you, it is actually quite intruiging.
Pass, if you just want some ordinary, more of the same entertainment stuff, but pick it up if you want to expand your VR horizon. To cite a line from the lyrics of the B-side version of an old Prince song (Alphabet Street): "this is not music, this is a trip"
Well done !
Interesting experience but only lasted 10-15 minutes. I refunded because of the length but would re-purchase in the future if more content is added.
Woot! This is clearly a lobour of love! Super saturated colour, trippy sounds and musical epicness. SU is a peek into the future and its awesome! Can't wait for more from this creator. Games are trying to cross the chasm to mainstream and art driven offerings like Synthesis Universe are a great step in that direction! Great Job Olivier!
A beautiful and surreal experience that has been on my wish list for years. Hopefully the next episodes wont take quite so long!
Synthesis Universe is a beautiful transformative experience. The stylized art and the music go hand in hand and create a wonderful environment I can't wait to see more of. I have first seen a preview of this many years ago at Oculus Connect 1 and it has not lost its magic. The design and mysterious world building hint at so much more. Looking forward to the next one!
There aren't a lot of arty VR experiences, so this one is definitely worth your attention.
I have known about Synthesis Universe and have been attracted to its design since very early in development. I will be reviewing this title as a fellow developer full disclosure. I really enjoyed the symbiotic relationship of music and puzzles used by the developer. It was easy to find out what to do next with the various subtle cues and that was very appreciated. There wasn't much usage out of hand controllers which I found myself putting aside and continued the experience using only my gaze. With all that aside, The art style is one of a kind and I JUST WANT MORE. for 10 dollars is a little high IMO for 15-20 minutes of content but after using VR for a very long time this is one of those titles that really transports you and keeps your attention throughout which is rare for me. At this point, I just want to binge all the episodes!
I read the reviews before purchasing and I assumed it was going to be about 30 minutes long give or take a few minutes. Unfortunately the game was done and dusted just shy of 16 minutes. Most of the end sequence was filled up by a preview of what was to come. I appreciate the developers efforts on this short demo of his work and was looking forward to hearing his music in full but in what can only be described as short preludes of a tune for each very short sequence I feel very much short changed.
Im disappointed the way this has turned out as the developer says he has put a lot of R&D and time into this. I really wanted to enjoy this and support an independant artist but for what little was on offer I felt obliged to refund.
An immersive journey through a universe of sounds and music. Relax and observe the environment react to your actions. Some changes will happen in front of you, some you will notice gradually. There are no immersion breaking elements. You will never be stuck, as the game is very intuitive. I really enjoyed looking at the tiny details or at the large structures. At the end you are presented with a glimpse of an interesting looking civilization, that I hope to learn more about in the next stories. The game is suitable to all: it is so comfortable that you will never be motion sicked, and yet worth trying even if you have experienced VR for some time.
OlivierJT has been working on this gorgeous universe for years - for as long as I have known about modern VR I've known that Olivier was working on something special.
Today with Synthesis Universe Episode 00 I had my first glimpse under the covers and was pretty impressed! This is as close to '90s demoscene but VR' I have ever experienced.
