This one is a tentative recommend based on the singleplayer experience. It kept me playing match after match today and I think I'll be playing more of it.
Gameplay is based on building up three resources gold, favor, and a sort of upgrade gauge for big base expansions and unlocking more powerful units. Average match for me has been five to ten minutes. There are five playable gods, who each have a different mix of powers, with some overlapping powers. Plus each god has unique passives. The units and towers are standard across factions so the variety relies on each gods traits and powers making them play a bit different. For me I find the gods different enough to enjoy as properly different factions.
The content offered isn't a huge amount but what's there feels pretty polished. No bugs so far, and the visuals are simple, clean, and pleasant to look at. The gameplay starts deceptively easy and before you know it the enemy is burying you with units and you're fighting for your life. It's those matches where the AI surprises you with its tenacity that engaged me enough to play again back match after match. It's been a really fun time trying it this weekend.
BUT. There is a massive caveat. The UI is rough. All the building, god powers, nearly EVERYTHING is on this radial wheel menu that is a chore to use. Example, let's say I need to build spearman to attack the enemy in the top lane of the board. I must open the radial wheel, click the spearman, then that that takes me to another radial wheel where I have to choose the direction and click. This is just... not necessary for a PC tower defense.
A possible alternative might be binding all units, towers, and god powers to hotkeys (rebindable preferably). Let's say I press the hotkey for spearman and the mouse is now locked to dropping a spearman each time I press left click. Then I can just mouse to whichever lane and click as many times as I like. Then when I'm done I can right click to release the lock to place spearmen, or alternatively I can just press another hotkey to change what my left click is locked to. This should give you some precious seconds back to react to the enemy, and that can sometimes make a significant difference.
The UI isn't bad enough to prevent my recommendation, and I can understand that there may be crossplay challenges that caused the game to get more of a console/mobile UI. But it is an everpresent annoyance that holds the game back at like a 7/10 experience instead of an 8 or 9. As of writing the game is on sale for five dollars and it is absolutely worth that. Even ten dollars to me feels really reasonable. Full price will probably feel a bit much for what you're getting, so just wait for a sale and give Sons of Ra a try.
I played a lot of tower defense games, but this "jumping" radial wheel for building towers and units is just terrible, sorry.
As a tower defense, it's lacking a lot: variety in towers, variety in enemy units. As an invader side of the tower defense, you have not really much interesting things to do. All in all, I find this game pretty disappointing.
This is one of the most frantic Tower Defense Versus games I have ever played. It is a relatively simple game but there is a lot of depth to what you can do strategy wise which makes it really good. I just really wish the developers would update it more. There is a lot of potential here and everything is pulled off really well but it seems they don't work on it anymore.
Besides all of that, I would absolutely recommend this game. It's a blast playing against your friends!
Really solid game with a novel multiplayer premise. Played with my partner for a few hours last night and every match was a nail biter.
As a TD game, I think this gets it right in that you only need ~4 types of towers and ~4 types of units. There is enough variety there to have lots of different strategies. I get annoyed by TD games with dozens of towers and hundreds of units because at some point if feels like you're playing a spreadsheet keeping track of all the stats.
Only buy when on deep discount
This is a fast and simple game. And as such, it can be fun. However, in single player it didn't really hold my interest. (Full disclosure: I am a scholar of ancient Egyptian history, and I was looking forward to this game for lighthearted breaks from study.) But I do have to wonder whether it's actually worth fifteen bucks. I think for that I would have expected something more. Perhaps for multiplayer (which admittedly I haven't tried)?
Can't play the game, the radial menu gets bugged every time, the devs told me this is an AMD texture bug and can't help me.
I feel a little bad for this cause i liked the game but it really was a waste of money for me.
Fun quick RTS game, certainly easy to learn, and balanced. Wish more people played it though.
Nicely done fun tower defense style game.
Bring this to Ipad and ill buy it again.
Thank you
Very solid gameplay. Always enjoyed tower defense games so it's no surprise I would enjoy this fast-paced games.
This game is a lot of fun and is a different take on the typical tower defense game. I really enjoy the different abilities for each of the unlockable characters and how they really switch the game strategy.
Neat concept and all the characters explore different playstyles. Soundtrack is a big standout, it's great!
Having played long enough to unlock all the gods, the strategy feels a little too minion-focused at time of review. None of the god abilities buff towers- only disabling or destroying them. Most abilities either damage or buff units already on the board, or summon a super powerful unit. I can reliably win games without building a single structure, and I would like to see the balance shift a bit towards building to really lean into the tower-defense aspect.
Even with these criticisms, I've still logged over 10 hours on it trying to find optimal strategies for the Arcade leaderboard and have overall had a good time with it.
It's really good. Negative comments are from players with few hours played. There is a lot of depth in this game and it can't be explored within 1-2 hours. Parting with our money can be difficult. This one is worth it.
Repetitive and boring. I was hoping there would be more of a variety and a higher replay value; every match seems and feels the same. I had higher hopes for this game.
This was after I played the arcade round which was vs 5-6 other Gods; it still felt repetitive.
first off i did have some fun but not enough to were i would recommend it to a friend, currently only two game modes arcade and multiplayer if you decide to play arcade the first half of its fun but then the ai decides to roll up its sleeves and just decimate you and it just starts being not fun anymore not to mention its kinda unfair that the player has to unlock unites and towers and the ai from what i saw doesn't have to.
like i said it was fun then it just got frustrating and stopped being fun and i mean you'd think for a tower defense game there would be a survival mode, as dumb as it sounds i like the art style and kinda want to see where this game can go.
A versus tower defense that is easy to pick up, but requires a good deal of strategy.
Played this at a convention and was thrilled to see this get a full release. Tons of fun to play with a friend. Great aesthetic and music.
I never write reviews, but I wanted to sing this game's praises. If the concept appeals to you, this will be a fun multiplayer game at a reasonable price point.
RTS/DoTA style hybrid based loosely in Egyptian theme/mythology.
The game appears to be deceptively simple, but in actuality has a surprising amount of depth.
Units are rock paper scissors type and picking the right unit against AI and other players is important as you're stuck with two types until the end game.
Very snowbally and controlling tempo is important. Zerging units down lanes may win the first few matches but expanding in territory/lane control with turrets becomes increasingly important as time goes on.
I've only played RA at this point (game is called sons of RA) and honestly his little laser beam thing is satisfying to use.
It feels impactful and can melt units and turrets across the map or over an area.
The visuals are fitting and lends a certain indie charm to it. The music is well crafted and gives the player a certain immersion adding layers to the addictivity that leaves you wanting to continue to play. And while most of the maps do end up looking similar there are certain charms about certain maps. I especially like the necropolis themed map.
However, the biggest compliment I can give to this game is the UI/UX as PC play feels extremely fluid and intuitive. Most RTS games fail at this as it has you memorising a literal encyclopedia of shortcuts and keystrokes. And as in other big budget games sometimes menus are unresponsive, lack clarity and become increasingly complicated and convoluted.
Sons of RA has neither of those issues. Any mistakes usually end up on me clicking way too fast and inaccurately. The radial style menu and responsiveness is something that can make or break this type of game where timing matters.
Overall this is a fairly well crafted game, and while lacking in endless diversity, it contains enough to make it enjoyable to play and master. Definitely a gem in the sea of neverending early access buggy and imbalanced games. It is a game that understands exactly what it is and does exactly what it promises to be.
Visuals: 8/10, nothing special or extra gorgeous, but quaint and fits the theme the game is aiming to achieve.
Gameplay: 8/10, solid gameplay, simple to pick up but has a good amount of depth, timing and planning.
Diversity: 6/10, the games greatest and only weakness really is here as most maps are similar looking enough that most will blend together after a while. It does have a few genuinely unique looking standouts.
Music: 9/10, from the menu music to the in game music and beyond it matches the theme of the game and the pace of the play so well. I feel like the mark of a great soundtrack is when it immerses you just enough to where the music no longer distracts you but instead adds to the enjoyment of the game, and Sons of RA OST definitely does this.
UI/UX: 10/10, Again I can not praise this part of the game enough, and is such a well thought out system. It fits perfectly and is both simple and intuitive.
Overall: 8.2/10, A simple, fast paced, high tempo strategy game with charming visuals and a fluid menu that will leave you playing over and over again.
Great, fast-paced tower defense game with an Egyptian God theme. Single player arcade offers a fight tower (think Mortal Kombat). No matchmaking at the moment, but easy to jump into a game with friends and folks over on the Discord. Multiplayer is fast and fun.
All units and buildings are the same across Gods, but the special abilities are different enough to add some variety to gameplay. Additional Gods unlock as you level up.
Just check it out. It's fifteen bucks and it's not like you're going to play all those old dusty games in your Steam library.
A new spin on the tower defence genre that delivers on the action without sacrificing the strategy aspect. Always good to see well executed innovation. And the controls are fine as long as you use the keyboard.
Alright quick review under 2 hours played. It's a FAST paced tower defense with all controls done through the mouse. That brings me to what I dislike so far. Tower defense is cool and all but when I have to hold a mouse button down then select a defense/offense/power by sliding the mouse then placement after that. It's just not intuitive. It should be abilities and units are selected with the keyboard and placement is through the mouse. That would allow the player to place units and abilities WAY faster.
Bugs: Through my time with multiplayer I've seen a few bugs. Other Opponents units don't show up at all. Not tower no nothing. So It's not just on my end but the other user too.
Its day one but they've got some controls and bugs to work out.
Looks good enough though but i'm not going to recommend this game to others at this time due to the couple of bugs I've seen and the atrocious controls.
Edit: Coming back in for a quick review change. I appreciate Otter Outta Water reaching out to me! Holding shift instead of right click was a literal game changer for me! Great game and bug free since the last few updates! Great game! Keep up the good work.
