Neuschwabenland liegt in der Ostantarktis - ca 4000km von Südafrika entfernt - auf dem antarktischen Festland. Die Inbesitznahme durch Deutschland erfolgte während der deutschen Antarktisexpedition gegen Ende der 1930 Jahre. Das Klima im antarktischen Sommer beträgt hier bis um die 20 Grad über(!) dem Gefrierpunkt. Durch Vulkanismus und Thermalquellen ist in wettergeschützten Arealen mancherorts selbst im antarktischen Winter das Klima gemäßigt.
