Preheat the oven to 170 C / Gas 3 (this may require some trial and error, you know your oven best). Line an oven tray with greaseproof paper.
Mix the self-raising flour, oats, dates, mixed peel, cinnamon, allspice, and zest.
Stir the dry ingredients into the saucepan with the molten butter and sugar. Mix well (it will be very crumbly), then put the mixture in a different bowl so it is not too hot. Then, mix in the beaten egg yolk.
Bake for 12 minutes (until fairly firm but not hard - just try them after 10 minutes and check again every couple of minutes, ovens can vary a lot). Leave them to cool for 5 minutes before eating
