The Royal Welch Fusiliers were formed by Lord Henry Herbert at Ludlow in March 1689 to oppose James II and to take part in the imminent war with France. The Royal Welch are one of the oldest infantry regiments in the regular army and have gained renown for participating in wars such as the War of the Grand Alliance, The Seven Years' War, the American Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars. The regiment gained much renown and was one of the first to be granted the honour of a 'Fusilier' title.
