This was quite a simple game, more an RPG than a hero school builder. I put it as 'recommend it' but it's more of a mixed review, preferably you should wait for a good discount to get this.
First off, graphics are fine. I'd say it could be better, but it works. The music is decent, and the credits song is a nice one.
The story is simple, although it could have been better (both the story and also side quests), and the execution of some areas could have been differently approached. It almost seems like stuff happens out of nowhere, and it did get a bit dull. I probably think all this because of the typos and not so great grammar. At least the characters seem pretty nice, they look good, but they are also simple.
The gameplay once again is fine, you get students, you build them up, and then you use them as your characters during the missions and combat, simple and to the point. Buy stuff, level up, and fight. I'll give them this though: the RPG and simple combat were the parts I enjoyed most of this game, there's definitely *some* fun to be had here. I'm also glad there's no time limit inside missions.
Speaking of combat, it's also simple just mash the button and use skill if needed. Of course, I also found it to be annoying when it reached a point where you need to level up a new set of characters to replace the old ones, which can take forever, so I only did it one time until I got further ahead, at which point I just used 2 good characters to slowly level 2 other ones to max by going to a good mission, killing high-level enemies, and then abandoning on purpose. After all, ain't no way I'm losing access to these easy levels. Obviously it made the game a bit more dull and boring, but it's either that or spend a LOT more time on a MUCH worse mission for levels. The drake ambush mission with Eve, 'Eve's Holiday' I think it was, is fantastic.
For the bad, besides what I've said above, there's:
Typos.
The pathfinding is hit or miss sometimes.
Clipping errors with characters in missions or in cutscenes clipping into the world
The controls take a bit of getting used to, clearly, this is built more for controller given the prompts you can see inside missions next to your students names.
It can become difficult to train new recruits later in the game as you don't have access to a good training area and will just have to send them to actual missions with someone that can actually fight and, well, do the same as I did in the combat section. Seriously, those Novice Training Grounds need to be better, or have another open up that gives a lot more XP.
And some bugs, like in the Netherwood mission, I think, don't remember what it's called, there's no pathfinding, everyone was on walking animation but stood in place, including my own team, except the one I controlled, which is good otherwise, I'd have been stuck.
Overall, it's a VERY simple game with simple systems that can get a bit repetitive while having some bugs, but you know what, I kinda started to enjoy its simplicity towards the end, although if you're going to get it, do it when there's a good discount on.
Valthirian Arc: Hero School Story ★☆☆☆☆
A wide and shallow grindy RPG puddle that ends up being worse than its browser counterparts.
In Valthirian Arc you act as the principal of a school that trains students in the art of battle, you not only manage the academy’s staff, students and construction but send students in jobs that can influence the tenuous political situation in the realm. Unfortunately, none of the game’s systems are thoughtfully developed, from the combat to the crafting, all manage to create expectations at the start and bore me by the end.
The first and second Arcs were focused and contained experiences that respected your time, and I believe that if Hero School, were much of the same, It would be a better game, I recommend playing the previous Valthirian Arcs in your browser, instead of buying this one, use a search engine or the following link: https://www.kongregate.com/accounts/lucidrine
Some quests are crashing over and over.
