But this isn't your English teacher's Jane Austen. Our game takes Jane's genteel brand of satire and sends it over the top, creating an Austen experience which has gone completely off the rails. It’s an experience rife with dropping pianos, outrageous rumors, and mercilessly manipulated rivalries. A Jane for the digital ages, as it were.
Features include:
• Hybrid gameplay that combines elements of a strategy game and a visual novel
• Fully customizable game avatars
• Randomized chapters and plot twists create a unique story experience for each playthrough
• Zany, oversized storylines set in a Jane Austen universe
• Quirky paper-doll illustration style
• Madcap hot-seat party-game multiplayer functionality pits you against up to four human opponents

Like others have said, the voice over is the highlight but the game itself is repetitive.
A game you can play in short but sweet sessions to enjoy a little regency satire. Can get repetitive and could be improved with more complexity, but I enjoyed playing several rounds. It would be more fun to play with a group of friends, but when you're an Austen fan, you take what you can get. There really should be more Austen-esque video games.
Very difficult game to review - some aspects of it are very fun and cute, I enjoyed the game, and the voice over is excellent (scolding you for skipping rhe cutscene!), and it's a loveletter to Austen.
But its not very long game. Being able to add more rounds (and multiple selections per round) would give it more strategic depth as sadly there isn't enough gameplay for a strong recommendation.
But supporting small games are important so it's worth it for that.
This game is fun. It's repetitive and simple with repetitive and simple rules, gameplay, and art, but it's my go-to game when I have 5-10 minutes to spare and want to play a quick puzzle-type game.
Its best feature is the multiplayer.
With that said, I can't recommend this game because there's a "joke" about one of the bachelors secretly being a woman. The kind of mindless, thoughtless, humorless "joke" that transphobes have made for years.
Greatest Regency-era YAWHG-like in the Galaxy!
Alright, so you've played The YAWHG or Monster Prom and want more of the same, right? Well, sorry to disappoint, but this game is far fancier and schmancier than anything else EVER. One might say, all other games are NOCD.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that if one wishes to make an Austen homage, one better get the language right. And by turf n' thunder, Austen Translation accomplishes this and more. The geniuses at Worthing & Moncrieff parrot Miss Austen's prose, pacing, style, themes, memes, AND manage to get the historical details spot on.
If you know anything at all about Jane Austen's novels, this game will make you smirk. If you enjoy the comedy of manners, period pieces set in Regency, or the British poking fun at themselves, then you'll probably laugh. Perhaps twice. This game is fun and def more enjoyable with friends.
This is so cute! I wish I had this years ago. I love all things Jane Austen and the tongue-in-cheek vibe is ridiculously fun. There's a multi-player mode so you can play locally with friends. I haven't done much with that (still in the middle of a pandemic at the time of this writing) but I'm looking forward to introducing this to all of my fellow Jane Austen friends as soon as possible. Definitely worth it for the experience!
This game is rather enjoyable and I did find quite a lot of randomness in the events. Admittedly this game is not for everyone, but if you enjoy Jane Austen and that whole genre as well as a British sense of humor you might just find this to your taste.
There is no save, which surprised me. But then each game only lasts around 10-15 minutes. So a restart doesn't seem so bad and since like many card games it is important to be aware of what has happened in the previous rounds, it does make sense.
I also liked that there was the Spinster Option - but you really have to be aware of what is happening and what the other "players (AIs)" are doing. Much more complicated that it looks at first.
As I said, a rather fun romp and recommended to those with a taste for Austen.
This is a cute, casual game inspired by Jane Austen's works and the culture of her time. Each game is fairly quick to play (about 10-15 minutes), which turned me off at first, but then I decided I liked that since I can play it even if I don't have much time. I love the graphic style, and the game play is amusing. It did take me a few tries before I really got the hang of it, so don't get discouraged it you're confused at first.
I was a little worried about replay value, but the game has more variety than you'd expect at first glance. Each game has the socialites attending four events, each of which is briefly described. The events are selected at random, so you can play several games in a row without much overlap. (There are some random variables in the descriptions also, where the names and preferences of different bachelors are inserted.) I've played probably two dozen times or more and there are some events I've only seen once or twice.
The bachelors are also pulled at random from a good-sized cast of eligible suitors, so there's variety there too.
All in all, this is a fun little game for the Austen fan. If you're in the mood for something lighthearted and quirky, I suggest you give it a try.
I think this is both fun and funny! I really enjoy playing! Easy, short and did I say fun?
It's a great concept, with appropriate graphics, writing and voice overs: All kinds of great things are there.
The problem is that the gameplay itself is dismal. I see how this could make a good board game if all the girls talked to each other between actions, and they all had unique information about the bachelors: Then you have mini-diplomacy, and the precious few actions you take can have meaning, and what you tell each other girl, whether you lie about your plans, or the extra information you have could lead to something fun and funny.
But as it is, there's barely enough actions to be even remotely thoughtful, turn order limits what you can do so much that maybe you can't do anything to help your cause or harm an opponent, and you have so little information most of the time it's all random regardless. So as it is, there is no game here, which is kind of sad, as a single game designer with good instincts could probably salvage this pretty cheaply.
The game has some really nice aspects, such as the voiceover, and the quirky different things that happen, but overall I was left feeling the game was slow, repetative and lacking much replayability. If it was repackaged as a mobile game, it might be okay, but as a PC game, it lacks.
Voiceovers:
The voiceover in the game is, perhaps, one of the best features of it. The tone and accent of the narrator really is excellent, and I liked the small touches added, such as if you skip the dialogue they complain at you.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is fairly straight-forward. I liked trying to work out what sort of stats the suitors had, but that was as complex as it got really. It has a good baseline for a game, but I feel like it should have gone a whole lot further in terms of depth/length. 4 scenarios really isn't enough to feel that satisfying as a journey.
Slow:
The game has a lot of filler between 'chapters' (a one paragraph situation with selected choices). The opening of the scene is nice where it puts in a background, but between scenes there are strips of coloured wallpaper, sometimes with a few words, or none. Then you have random 'cutscenes' which are just massively zoomed in faces, which overall were just disorientating and annoying, especially since it isn't skippable. Some things are, but not enough. There are enough pauses of length that you really end up feeling the padding there.
Repetative/ Low replayability:
The issue I had with the replayability might be debated by some, because there is actually a system in place to make it more replayable. You have more scenarios depending on what suitors you have in the lineup, but the randomness was poor, so I ended up getting the same one three games in a row. Likewise the stats of your suitors and the different rivals are different, so there is that, as well as the fact that many stats of the suitors are hidden, encouraging you to play more to work them out. Unfortunately the issues with speed mean that I got too frustrated to really try more than 10 games. The game could really do with some sort of long-term goals, as I just wasn't finding the steam achievements encouraged me enough to want to play.
PC vs Mobile
In general I would say that this is a very casual game. There is very little requirement to think in it. It seems to be the sort that you pick up and play a couple of times then forget about for a few weeks. It would probably do well on the mobile market because of this, and because of the style of its graphics. I feel like the graphics in particular were almost designed for mobile gaming, rather than PC, because of the sheer scale of them, and the titles. On the other hand, the actual gameplay of the chapters has very tiny writing, which would need to be scaled up, along with the stats, for that. The visual accessibility there would need looking at.
Overall, I would probably give the game 2 out of 5 stars, because it has some nice things, but overall it left a bad impression of the final result of 'that's it?'.
Very cute game - a must for Jane Austen fans such as myself. The wit and satire is particularly sharp, and the game certainly feels unique to many others out there. There is not a ton of replay value after a couple hours of gameplay. It's still a little buggy, ran in to a few bugs in the 7 or so play throughs I've done, but nothing too frustrating. Worth the price.
I didn't see a multi-player feature, but that would be a lot of fun if they added it.
This is a very enjoyable little game! Bordering on ASMR levels of satisfaction. The humour is on point, the music and narration are great, and so is the art. There's a lot of amusement to be found in creating different ladies and finding their matches, or playing more than one at time. If you go into it with a personality in mind for your avatar and make your choices according to that it keeps the game fresh for a long time.
Great game for all fans of Jane Austen.
Definitely much fun when you play with your friends.
I'm a huge Jane Austen fan and I really enjoyed this game. I wish there were more Jane Austen-based games out there.
The game does get a bit repetitive, but that's unavoidable for the game's format. Sometimes I think I've got the game figured out, but the algorithm still manages to pull a surprise. It has good replay value in that sense.
I really liked the diversity of the skin tones and hair colours. The customisation options don't add much to the gameplay I would say, but they are a fun touch to have.
I do wish some of the unskippable transitions can be skipped. I also wish there was a skip button on screen to skip scenes instead of using a click to do so. There were a couple of times where I accidentally clicked more than once and two scenes were skipped when I really only wanted to skip one.
It is a truth universally denied that comparing your rival's laugh to the baying of hounds is extremely gratifying.
Fun little game of wit, ruthlessness and, if necessary, charm.
Hilarious.
While the style and humour is written with Austen's wit, the situations are definitely more fun for a modern audience.
With a few more plays I have seen different scenarios for each chapter, and little suprises such as the oppurtunity to talk to the bachelor on your own to gain more affection. Only problem is the +2 to wit I won with a correct answer didn't appear, and when the new chapter began, it stopped playing on one of the girl's turns. Not frozen, just not moving.
Quite a funny little game - I'm enjoying it ! It installed and worked great for me. The overall look and sound of the game are quite charming - and the satire quite satirical! I enjoyed unleashing ants under rivals skirts and comparing their dresses to harp covers to beat them to my chosen bachelor. Would recommend to anyone who likes a casual and clever short game with high replayability and of course, enjoys Austenesque wit and ruthlessness :)
*_* A quirky little love letter to Jane Austen *_*
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
― Jane Austen
Well it launches to the title and then nothing happens. No play button appears. I've tried reinstalling, repairing and restarting. I'd love to actually see the game and amend my review if it started working. :|
