One part Minesweeper, one part Civilization. With every click of the mouse your empire grows stronger. Spend your turns wisely, and when the barbarians come you will conquer them and re-unite your kingdom. Will your empire stand the test of time? Claim your destiny and unlock the power that lies at the heart of Oasis.
Defense of the Oasis is a fast turn-based exploration strategy game. Each level gives you 85 turns to explore, discover cities, build roads, research technology and build as strong a kingdom as you can. When your turns are up, the barbarian hordes attack! If your cities survive the assault, you capture the kingdom's Glyph of Power—if you found while exploring. Capture twelve Glyphs of Power from twelve different levels to win the game. Lose too many battles against the barbarians, and you will lose the game.
Defense of the Oasis features four different difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Hard and Insane) as well as nine different multi-level campaign scenarios. All the levels in the game are procedurally generated, for infinite replayability.

Highly recommended to any students of game design.
This is a groundbreaking game that came out too soon, before there was an audience that could appreciate it, or even genre tags to describe it. The graphics are simple, but the gameplay is elegant, and sessions are a perfect length. It's always tempting to play one more map, or start one more run.
This game is at least a couple of decades old, I used to play it a bit when I was younger.
It's a very mediocre game. It feels almost like a board game and it's also quite simple (perhaps too simple) and luck plays a factor. Uncovering tiles is a fun mechanic, though there are better games like Desktop Dungeons that do this.
It's an okay timewaster if you don't mind the simplicity and repetition.
old school fun
A puzzle/strategy game similar to minesweeper but with a civilization-building theme and more complexity.
I originally played the demo in 2005 and was very impressed, putting it on my to-buy list. However it is by a small game developer and for whatever reason it disappeared online. I kept thinking about it over the next 20 years, checking from time to time if I could find a copy. Very happy to see it pop up on Steam.
The game is as fun as when it launched. Graphics are dated but that's not an issue for a simple puzzle game. There is usually more than one way to solve each stage, depending on the strategy you use - connect and grow your cities, search for weapons, or mine for technology. There is a fun campaign mode that shakes up the standard game play, and gives you a rouge-like experience as you try to make a run through the stages. The RNG can be unfair; some stages seem impossible. But that's a small negative for what is otherwise an excellent game with very clever design. If you're into puzzle games this is a must play.
