Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Case of the Tin Soldier

All the original Holmes games are excellent. Great puzzles. Great acting. A lot of fun.

Seriously one of the most fun detective games where i actually had to take notes, i wish we could get more of this!
Only downside is that on "Tin Soldier" the subtitles seem broken, that makes it hard to write down the names correct. If you know the games from Sega CD, the quality improvement on this is incredible. The video quality is so much improved.
A great game like the rest of the series!

I really appreciate having these episodes of early 90s FMV available on a modern platform and wish I'd played them earlier.
Are they perfect games? Not at all. Without the achivements popping up when you find the required clues, figuring out the optimal solution would be very tiresome. Typical 90s extending the gameplay through trial and error.

But it is worth it to explore the different performances and cute little side stories. I give the games a lot of credit for letting you follow useless clues way further than you need.
Tho I see no real reason to split it up into 3 games, and thus will review them as one.

The Case of the Mystified Murderess -
By far the strongest of the offerings, even if the solution is very silly.
It has more complex storytelling and avenues to explore, and the actors you talk with in this one are some of the strongest performances. You also get to solve both crimes related to the case.

The Mummy's Curse -
In the middle, it has the least requirements to solve the case, and leaves out one of the biggest clues from the required scenes.
It also keeps bringing up a side-plot that goes nowhere and has no resolution (tho we can assume who the culprit is). But it relies on context clues and reading the newspaper more like a puzzle, and the murderer is pretty fun.

Tin Soldier -
I find this the weakest of the 3 cases for 2 main reasons - we solve it not through dialogue but through exploring an empty room, and getting to that clue is a massive reach. Second we just completely ignore a 2nd murder that is directly related to the first. I guess it is not technically required to solve the case, but it is unforgivable that even if Holmes does visit both Matin and the Count and is told straight up Vladimir killed Matin to get the ruby back he never reports it to anyone.
I do appreciate that we are allowed to visit all the surviving lottery ticket holders, and will give it credit for having probably the most grounded motive of the 3.

I reccommend these 3 episodes to anyone interested in FMV games and schlock, and wants to play just to experience all the different performances and actors. It is not worth it at all if you want to play just to get a good score.

Short but enjoyable case.

I only recommend this game to those who understand what it is and want his type of game.

So, if you know what it is and like it: Go for it!

This is a remastering of the old Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective PC game: Same old videos, new Unity 3D engine.

The old Consulting Detective PC game, and thus this one, is based on the tabletop Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, which I find a lot more fun than the PC version(s), but is a lot more expensive and sadly I lost half of my tabletop version before completing all of it.

If you can afford the tabletop version, I recommend getting that.

If you can't afford it, or just want to stick to the PC, then this could be fun for you.

WARNING & NOTE:
This is not your typical point & click adventure game. This is a much more complex deduction game. This is closer to a real mystery solving game, than your typical point & click adventure mystery.

It was an interesting story and enjoyable use of time. It doesn't necessarily let you pursue clues in the order I would have hoped. But most importantly, ROWLAND/ROLAND is spelled 2 different ways... Which is maddening! Where is the the great Holmes on proofreading!!!?

Bought it in 2015, played it for two minutes, realized it wasn't a normal point & click, abandoned it.

Played it again this morning, solved it in about half an hour.

Recommended for its uniqueness and bad acting, and an extraordinary amount of meaningless details.

It was quite a decent game, if short. It takes a little effort to understand how the game works, but it isn't bad at all once you get the hang of it.

Not so bad as the others in this series, in that there's a decent red herring of a plot thread, which was however resolved extraordinarily abruptly - seriously, surely there should have been something about calling the police or Interpol or someone about Volkov?

I wish they weren't co-opting Holmes and Watson into these stories. If you're going to use those names, you should have a story that can live up to to the originals, and that's just not there. Still, that seems to be the way all the adaptations this century are going...

Very short game, but fun nonetheless.

Another tedious mystery in this boring series of non-games. There's no intrigue, no atmosphere, and absolutely no reason to "play". The acting is horrendous and there is zero actual gameplay. Why does it end with you going before a judge? Holmes was a "CONSULTING" detective. It's in the title for heaven's sake! The information would be passed onto Lestrade or another representitive of Scotland Yard and it would be them going to court.

There are small improvements over the abysmal Mega CD version but the absence of trophies/achievements and trading cards means that there will be nothing to drag you back to this after you suffer through it the first time.

AVOID!

Only if you are a detective fan.

Playing this little full motion video game is just like taking a history lesson, one about the era of early multimedia efforts that at the time, early 90's, was the next big deal. It was, but not too much for videogames, since this kind of stuff was suffering from replay value and that was it demise. Interesting, also, these games were released, late 90's, for regular DVD players.

Honestly it looks just like old TV shows, cheap ones. The main thing is to solve a mystery using clues from newspapers and visiting suspects. The less fooling around you do the best score you achieve. Once you have enough evidence you go to the judge and present your case. That's pretty much it. There's nothing else.

Now, is this any good? Yes, if you like retro stuff. Yes, if you're a Sherlock Holmes fan and you just like anything with SH on it. Yes, if you also like very casual games and rather short ones or just taking a break from your usual high-time cosuming regular games. Yes, if you find the cutscenes rather funny than primitive. Yes, if you're OK with the short experience you'll get considering the price also matches the content. I, for one, think I got what I paid for and was kinda entertaining to play and burn an hour or two. You should consider getting this when on sale and get the pack including the three SHCD games since that is the best value.

The playtime shown is not accurate, because I left after 15 minutes to get a snack. That's how interesting this game was.

I don't mind that it's an old game and I don't mind the simple mechanics. But it was so utterly boring that I just clicked to finish the game, although I knew early one who the murderer was. But no, the game wants to torture you and makes you visit more places than necessary, just for playing time I guess.

I bought this game as part of a bundle and, honestly, it wasn't worth it. Too many things are common among the three games, making me think the developer milked three games out of one. With a playtime of about 40 minutes if you're slow (no skipping anything) for each game, I wouldn't recommend it.

If you've played (or Reviewed) one of these games then you have played them all; essentially the exact same game split up into (3) different mysteries. They could have easily had a better game if they combined these for a single more complete game.

As Sherlock Holmes, you will be tasked with figuring out who killed the retired General. The meat of the game is sifting through newspapers to find clues which perpetuate you to navigate to various locations to question potential FMV subjects.

The acting isn't bad for the age and budget of this game; but it’s definitely not "Sherlock Holmes" in my opinion. Watson and Sherlock definitely don't fit the bill like I am so accustomed to. Spending more than 1 hour on this title would be a stretch so plan accordingly.

Worth $0.99; you can usually get all 3 installments for a couple of bucks!

will start off by saying that this game has very little to actually "do" in it, it is more of an interactive story almost, but not quite. The object of all three of the Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective mysteries is to gather clues by deciding on what people and places to visit. Once you have gotten enough information to solve the crime/s you will go before a judge and he will ask a few questions that you must answer correctly. Getting to the judge and answering questions using the fewest amount of clues that you can will give you a score. The goal is to solve the mystery by using only as many clues as it takes Holmes to solve the mystery. There is not a lot of replay ability in the game except if your score doesn't match Holmes' once you have solve the mystery. I wouldn't expect it to take very many playthorughs to match Holmes scores.

If you like Sherlock Holmes , or some not too hard brain teasers, you will enjoy the game. It is only about 60-90 mins of total gameplay in most instances for each mystery. As for the price, I would definitely go the collection route as it's almost half price. I would probably also wait til it might be on sale as well.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is a very old full-motion video series, consisting of three games (other being the Case of the Mummy`s Curse amd thah of the Mystified Murderess). The game brings a murder case, which is then investigated via checking newspapers and interviewing experts, witnesses and such. The investigative options are personal visits by Holmes and/or Watson, sending Baker Street Irregulars in their stead or simply check Holmes` archives. When enough evidence is gathered, the player may take the case to the court and answer a few questions pertaining to the culprit and the motive of the crime.

Each action costs a particular amount of points - sending the detectives to a relevant location costs 10 points, sending the urchins instead costs 5 and a missed target (irrelevant location) costs 20. The point of the game, rather unfortunately, is to solve a case with the lowest point possible. This is a little counter-productive, in the sense that in order to achieve the lowest point, one would forego quite a lot of decent acting and so on.

However, there is no obligation to follow that path and you can perfectly follow up each and every clue, enjoying what is essentially less than an hour of quite nostalgic adventure gaming. It`s not at all like any conventional adventure game - it has no point-and-click or narrative choices like those of more recent titles. However, Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective features impressive FMV title of the very old school, which can give an interesting glimpse into the 1990s` TV-styled aesthetics of similar games of the period at a absurdly low price.

Disappointing and frustrating menu system interrupts the flow of the game. You are given a ridiculous number of locations/people (a whole alphabet of them) to visit before you could possibly conceive a reason to visit any/many of them. All you seem to be able to do is "visit" locations and generate a video of the characters at that location. I cant see a way of searching locations (even the crime scene) or asking characters questions. There are no hints about what to do next, so the only course of action seems to be to visit location after location from the long list and see more video conversations. The so called "Clues" in the notebook section of the menu seem to just be a statement of facts you've already witnessed so what is the point of them?! Even for the price, I am dissappointed. It's like a visual novel but without any sort of pathway trhough it or real interactivity.
