Not really a fan of the AI assets, and the overall quality definitely feels like it's dropped from past titles.
I love the old mdickie games, but this one is absolutely infuriating. The camera is annoying and keeps moving constantly where its a bit nauseating. The interaction with characters forcing relationships onto you is infuriating. The fact that you can't access the editor when you actually buy the game, I get the thing about earning it but it should be an option to unlock it. The random attacks by allies too for absolutely no reason as well. I just feel angry playing it when fighting against the camera and the rest of the issues.
Honestly this is the best game of mdickie's since wrestling empire. It feels like smashing action figures together just like wrestling empire with a gamified turf war to keep you busy among the chaos that is normal in his games.
Its basically like wrestling empire but instead of matches in a ring you have a bunch of impromtu matches on the streets of the cities map. Every turf has a leader and if you beat the leader you gain the turf. The chaos leads to fun emergent stories the player can make up themselves.
An example with my first character was that he became a Kung Fu turtle after being rear ended while riding his motorcycle around. He then took up the super heroes cause and started claiming the map for them. During a particularly bad fight (a 1v7 that i accidently started lol) I accidently gave my Kung Fu Turtle powers and identity to a random person while button mashing during the fight. Waking up on team civi i checked the map, saw that they owned the army base and the barracks so i went there to load up. After that my character had a bit of a "the boys" arc where i went on to take out as many supes as i possible could. About 4 days of that and i've burned all bridges with my old super hero friends and am leading team civi to victory... Then the New Kung Fu Turtle approaches me and asks if I want to take up his (my) mantle. I say yes and become the New Kung Fu Turtle 2.0. I'm a reboot of my own reboot.
So now that all the heroes hate me I'm struggling to win fights because often the people on my own team will have beef with me. Its lead to a real low point in the new kung fu turtle 2.0's career. He's down a hand and just doing his best to recover from his phase of cosplaying the boys.
Yes this game is simple, its really like bashing action figures together, but its fun if you have the imagination to play along with them. Great MDickie game
It's hard af but fun, the developer apparently doesnt want to fix some flaws that are in all of his games, like insufferable dialogue mid fight, game breaking bugs and the camera being total shit
A lot of AI is used here that is not disclosed on the Steam page. This includes music and texture assets, including use of that horrid ghibli model. Wish MDickie hadn't of gone here, I'm not expecting much high quality with an MDickie game, not really what I want, the jank is part of the charm. Seeing the AI generated shit breaks that.
This game would be perfectly fine without this. Replace the AI song with a sound of yourself farting in a tunnel and that would be an improvement.
Mat you've done it again, Made a sloppy game and then praised yourself a god because "No one can use AI like you can" but on the real note, worst entry you've ever had, The fact you HAD to use AI or felt like you had to just speaks numbers for your integrity (In which you have none old sport) I really do hope this is your last game, cause this is what you're known for at this point, a lonely developer whomst failed to tailor any aspect of any of his games to be enjoyable to his fans.
After going back even with modifying the game. Still lame.
I love the game and like how he tied two games in one but I cannot till this day get over the camera system on here LMAO.
Uses ai generated images, literally saw the generic studio ghibli style inside the trailer as a poster. you could have just taken a screenshot of wrestling empire and plastered it there but to go out of the way to generate trash like that?
not good
camera is the worst of any mdickie game (impressive)
cant pick your own powers so you get stuck with dumb shit like shoot milk until you beat the game
wish i could play extra lives or super city
ai relentlessly annoying
friendlies stand infront of your gunfire
somehow, its equal parts fun and frustrating. If you like Wresting Empire, its worth playing. If the clunkiness and complete lack of any semblance of basic QoL features didn't deter your fun in that game, then there's plenty for you to enjoy here. However, its the same engine, same mechanics, same art assets, and many of the same design philosophies as WE, so all of that game's flaws are still present, and often amplified here. Much of the jank is far more frustrating here, like constant, repetitive, unskippable mid-combat npc dialogue boxes and cutscenes, the worst camera in any 3rd person action game ever, sudden rng character deaths that derail 8 hours of steady, well executed game play. In many ways, it feels like a roguelike with 0 meta progression outside the painstaking process of unlocking full character customization.
Copypasting a janky wrestling arcade sim into a superhero roguelike shouldn't work. And in many ways it doesn't.
yet, in someways it works really well. at last well enough for me to sink several days into.
at present state, i can easily see myself getting 30+ hours out of it, and probably more if the game gets mod support, QoL updates, and hopefully extra content. I'd probably even buy some DLC expansions.
If you can get past the jank and rage inducing design choices, its a fun game and well worth $15.
I love MDickie games and I'll probably continue to play this one, but the ai assets are really disappointing to see in the full-release in a game I was really looking forward to. Additionally the sleep button being the same as the transform button seems like a huge oversight, I really hope workshop support is added so I can enjoy this game the way its meant to be enjoyed, cause Wrestling Empire was lit.
MDickie releases a game, i buy - simple as.
i was excited for this game but it has multiple AI generated images and even one of the main menu themes sounds exactly like what comes from suno (AI song generator). as of writing this is not disclosed on the steam page.
I'm not a fan of the AI title screen music or the AI Whack Ax poster featured in the Trailer, however these problems will be remedied by the mod loader that will hopefully be coming out soon. Still a great game and definitely his best since WEmpire.
Infinite Lives has its chaotic fun parts combining superpowered heroes and villains with zombies or driving vehicles to fight people, but that's about where it ends.
When you first boot up the game it starts as a fresh clean slate. You can't go right into the character creation to customize playable characters with superpowers or attributes because it's locked behind story progression.
Starting off the story, you pick to be a powerless character from one of 3 factions - civillians (white), heroes (blue) or villains (purple) and spawn into the world. The story doesn't give you a clear objective or goal to do, but from my understanding you have to conquer the entire city and surrounding areas by holding every area under your faction's control via turf war. At random per new playthrough each faction will hold territory dictated by their faction colours and you'll need to go to those areas held under enemy control and knockout every enemy to claim it. What irks me about this gameplay mechanic is that you might have say, a third of the map controlled and victory is in sight, but some random event occurs which doesn't explain anything at all and in an eye blink, you automantically change factions like a forced team balance thing and you now have to conquer more of the map than you originally started with.
As this is a MDickie game and randomization is his favourite thing, getting lucky with RNG for everything is needed from automatically reversing moves, having more allies in the same area to help you because enemies gang up on you relentlessly, gaining the right superpowers to make fights easier, and getting good weapons to spawn so you can quickly dispatch enemies. This is especially the case when you start off as a powerless character who can't transform into their superhuman state to use superpowers while most NPCs can and use OP powers like time control and be bulletproof from the get-go.
Mat's biggest and most versatile game yet. A must-have for those who prefer a sandbox game with so many potential storylines.
Another hit in a line of crazy fun games, and the most open of them all.
It's a fun but also sometimes a stressfull game.
I played for about 3 hours, and I noticed some things:
1. AI generated music. (hopefully it's a placeholder)
2. Very clunky camera.
3. in one of the trailers there is an AI generated image of one of the previous games.
The rest of the game is pretty much an 8/10.
Mat combined all the goodness of his games and creativity and gave us this masterpiece, it's super fun and has tons of replaybility but one thing that could be better is the camera it turns super slow , other than that its fun and i recommend it for any mat games lover.
EDIT - For people who think this is a irrelevant review, I like the idea of "SUPER CITY AND EXTRA LIVES" Merged together in the 3D universe and secondly just like WRESTLING EMPIRE, OLDSCHOOL AND HARD TIME III, The game will be receiving updates for a year, so it's worth the investment and as I said at the end "Any mat games lover will enjoy this".
As someone who has praised MDickie consistently as the GOAT indie developer and best fighting game developer in the past, it is hard for me to say that Infinite Lives feels like a significant misstep. While the idea of the game holds promise, the execution is lacking; it is a very unbalanced and confusing experience.
The game is basically a crossover with superheroes, putting together Hard Time 3, Wrestling Empire, and Old School all in one map. There is also a profound lack of direction or good explanation on how the game's core systems actually work. You are thrown into a world with minimal guidance, and when you run out of health, you start a "new life." You are then just randomly teleported to a new area and start severely injured.
One notable disappointment is the use of AI-generated music in the main menu. This may have been an oversight, as that is fine to use as a pre-release placeholder, but keeping it in for release is a mistake.
This game could be great; it just needs a lot of refining and balancing. A clearer tutorial that is not just my character talking to me in the beginning, and an explanation for how the new life mechanic works, would help a lot in making the game engaging.
The camera also still needs major work. A mod for Wrestling Empire had fixed the camera for the most part, so I assume modders will be taking over some of the fixes in the future.
