Game mechanics

The goal of each level is to destroy the vortices. Although some vortices will take several stage to destroy. Upon reaching a level where the vortex can be totally destroyed, it will unleash the most dangerous of its swarms to make things a lot harder for our players. The twist we've added in this game is that the vortex on each level will keep growing, throwing ever increasing waves of enemies to overwhelm the player, so that they must continually fight to push the vortex back. The game has been especially designed to play with up to 3 friends, although we're considering adding an optional fourth player based on player feedback.

To implode the vortices, the player must destroy enemies to collect their energy. On top of the vortex there are two spheres: The player level (blue sphere) and the vortex level (red sphere). When the energy item sent by the player reaches the vortex, the blue sphere shrinks the black hole, symbolized with the red sphere. But in the other hand the black hole is constantly growing stretching the blue sphere. The game ends when the blue sphere makes the red one disappear or the red one grows to its maximum size. The concept is kind of new, reuses the concept based in Beekyr and improves it by removing the unnecessary bits.

Game's history

The alien war machines caught us by surprise. A strange energy vortex appeared near colony Vehar-12, then they came, swarming from the centre of the vortex. The first attack was just over 20 Eartho-days ago and already eighteen colonies have been lost. 56 million souls, gone. Now they're approaching Earthos, our biggest colony. We're fighting back, but if it falls, we will be all but destroyed. The vortices had seemed all but indestructible. But now we have hope. Our technicians patched together a captured war machine, and discovered the key to the vortices, a new kind of energy they've dubbed 'Lumergy'. Our first tests of the device lead to an unexpected discovery. The energy used to create a vortex could also be used to destroy one. Using our modified war machine we can collect the Lumergy, and reverse its energy to collapse a vortex, destroying the swarm within. We can predict where the next vortex will open, and we can destroy it. We have only one chance at this, only one ship. Your only mission: Destroy the vortices. Save all of us.

Somehow i lost interest in this Shumps... there's a few problem with this game:

1) I guess the dev thinks shumps are too hard so they... erm, encourage you to get hit? So you can reflect them bullets away while you had your I-frames to do more dmg to the boss? I was literally tanking hits ! In A SHUMP GAME ! WHAT? And the boss dies so fast if i do that

2) If your ship are too big, then you are going to die fast (your ship is your hit point)

3) Somehow this game requires more ram than Skyrim? I can run skyrim with my outdated laptop, this game tells me game runs too slow... until the point that Achievements will be disabled... Why?

Pros:
1) I do like a huge variety of ship to choose from

2) There's a fk ton of achievements for a Shump like this

Otherwise... only buy on a Huge Sale, but you're not missing much if skipping this

Short summary: do not waste your time.

Pros:
Good controls
Overall engaging and satisfying gameplay loop

Cons:
The game, essentially, is a battle of attrition. You have a single life (technically, there are 2 continues, but as you lose some of your power when losing life, most of the time you won't have dps to finish the stage).
Since you only have one life, you are completely dependent on the shield\health rng for some tough areas. To exacerbate the problem, bad level up powerups rng will also screw your run.

There are POWER DOWN powerups with Level down being the worst - it's instant restart.
On top of that, there are stages that are basically DPS checks and if you are unable to kill enemies in a pace to stop the portal from expanding, it's a restart, as you will die in the following 60 seconds going through the gauntlet.

There is so much stuff happening on the screen considering the addition of the triangles you need to collect on top of the usual bullet hell that getting hit feel more rng than the lack of skill.

Extremely repetitive - each playthrough is completely the same. As you progress through the levels being slowly depleted of your health and hoping for good powerups rng, ask the game: where the fun?..

Honestly... I had high expectations for this game so my disappointment probably isn't justified. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it. It's fun and action packed, but I expected more. Permanent upgrade options and customization would be nice for starters. Also, it annoys the hell out of me that I can't use my mouse with this game because I hate using "gamepads". Otherwise, I will say this game is visually stimulating and a great way to get lost in to get lost in a few hours of chaos.

Pros:
-Controls work well.
-Unusual mechanics are easy to grasp (kill enemies->grab white stuff)
-Abstract and kinda pretty.

Cons:
-All players ships (default mark) look the same, which leads to confusion.
-Rounds are over way too fast, sometimes a couple seconds.
-No reason to ever stop shooting. Why even have a shoot button in that case?
-Every level plays the same.
-Bosses are kinda lame.
-Left us feeling bored, which is odd considering the fast-paced gameplay.

Bottom-line:
Generic shootey shootey action with a little gimmick, but mind-numbingly repetitive and not really fun.
Not recommended.

The game is pretty awesome; Great gameplay, but with some *VERY SERIOUS* flaws that made me ragequit and should be removed.

1. Cmon. Mashing fire button on a 2015 (played on 2019) shmup? In this game this is particularly serious because ships have different fire rapidity, and a turbo stick or keyboard macro completely breaks balance.

2. Many POWERDOWNS, with no in-game explanation to what everything does, until after you pick them. LVL down on stage ~24 = game over...

Remove those, and I'll buy VA2!

I do like the game, the sound effects aremind me of 80's arcades. The waves are fair and I do like that the asteroids cut the screen in half and force you to fight even though you only have a restricted area to use.
I have had no graphics issues and this game works perfectly with a 360 pad.
I would recommend it to those who would like to add a shoot em up to their collection.

There are various extra features, but the core gameplay is disorganized and yet repetetive.
It doesn't really compare with the Galaga sequels, etc.
A good shmup has interestingly planned levels, and signifcant variety in bosses and power ups.

I nearly completed it on my second play, constrantly interrupted by "computer too slow!" warnings in the middle of the screen. If this has to be shown, don't do it in the middle of the screen, blocking the action!
Also, this was on a VR capable PC, which easily runs games of vast complexity.
Perhaps it is the code itself which is "too slow"?

A highly enjoyable SHMUP that plays like a much more intense Galaga. Beautiful neon aesthetics and a retro-arcade UI make for a visually appealing package.

For me, this game has two major highlights:

1) Multiple ships that all feel noticeably different. Each one provides a distinct play style.

2) Three-player local co-op. Teaming up with friends is fun!

I have only one complaint through several hours of playtime: the game's difficulty does not scale reasonably. I have an easy time wiping out the first several bosses. The second-to-last feels like triple that difficulty, and the final boss is exponentially more difficult still. I don't consider the challenge a bad thing, but it feels cheap, as the game does not prepare you for the sudden escalation in difficulty.

Even so, this one gripe is not enough to lower my opinion of the game. I recommend it, especially if you are a fan of the genre.

Being more of a retro throwback to the 8-bit arcade games, Vortex Attack (VA) does not bring much new to the genre, yet I found myself having quite a bit of fun challenging my high scores & pushing further through the levels. Leaning more on the easy side, getting through much of the game's levels will not take a lot of time to conquer. Once you get the hang of things, powering through the main 50 levels may take you 30 mins, but getting a high scoring run is more challenging.

Collecting the 'lumergy' that rains down on you from enemies you've destroyed will increase your combo score & help close the vortex for the level. There is some good gameplay balancing out collection combos while trying to dodge & clear the screen as quickly as possible. Later levels tend to turn full-on bullet hell, but still is rather forgiving with its regenerating health between levels/sectors & your ships able to take quite a few knocks. The ships you unlock as you defeat the bosses all have unique stats that give them very different play styles & firepower configurations.

Your success in later levels does seem to have an element of luck to it, more specifically in regards to the power-up drops. Without the firepower, levels become very slow & painful, & your score will suffer. These seem somewhat random to me, not to mention the risk of simply missing picking them up when they do spawn, or accidentally hitting a power-down drop in the chaos. When you do get a good run though, with a well-timed Shield or Force Field power-up drop &/or the right ship weapon upgrades, the firepower (and resulting carnage) can be glorious!

Boss levels occur every six levels. Like the bonus levels succeeding the boss, or the asteroid field levels that require some different tactics, the boss fights offer to mix things up from the regular level gameplay. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the boss levels much as the mechanics were basic & very similar on each iteration. If you do not have your firepower upgraded also expect a very long & dull boss fight. This lack of variety also hinders the regular levels. Although they do change a little bit between sectors, they are very 'samey' in how they play out.

I found the menu navigation frustrating to use with an analog stick being very touchy with no deadzone present & occasionally on start-up it would not resize to fullscreen correctly (on 4k?), but once running properly the game is silky smooth. Also, on a very minor note it seems the high score table is not updated for 2018 season in the Steam Interface via achievements tab so high scores can only be seen in the game.

VA is not the best out there, but not all that bad either. It's the sort of simple shoot 'em up I like to kick back to after an exhausting day at work. Load it up for a quick session, chill & let the brain zone out.

No twitch reflexes needed, easy going & forgiving, yet still offering an enjoyable challenge.

This takes me back to when I was a kid in the 80's, dropping 20c pieces into the Space Invaders and Galaxian/Galaga machines, getting my butt thoroughly whooped, scream at the machine, kick the machine and then feed more 20c pieces into it, as I had such a deeply unhealthy relationship with the Arcade Machines at that time of my life.

However, I can play better than I played as a kid and am more mature, now that I am pushing 40, so Vortex Attack is a much more enjoyable experience, even when I do get killed and lose that score I worked so hard at raising.

So, if you are an adult gamer that wants to relive the glory years of the Arcade or a younger gamer that has an affinity for retro-styled games for their simplistic, yet engaging gameplay, that's easy to learn but difficult to master. I recommend you get this game and just have some fun!

Pros:

-Fun Gameplay
-Acceptable Soundtrack
-Good controls
-Controller Support
-Trading Cards
-Achievements
-Catches well the ''Arcade'' feeling
-Up to 3 simutaneous players

Cons:

-Badly-made level design (in some areas, especially the bosses)
-Questionable hitbox
-Levels tend to be repetitive
-First time the game is launched, you are greeted with a benchmark to determine the power of your system, but what we have here is a fairly low-specs friendly game, so why is this necessary in the first place?

Other infos:

Game is family friendly: Yes
Hardware Requirements: Low
Game's overall relevance: Recommended.

Anyone who's played games of the past old or new gamer's know not all games need to have state of the art AAA graphics to have pure pick up and drop pure arcade experience, this game is one of them.
Vortex Attack is a pure arcade shoot em up of the 80s and early 90s, which is no bad thing by far.its good to see these sort of games coming back.

OK so on to the game itself which I have already mentioned the graphics are of the 80s and early 90s.
And it's not going to win awards for the graphics, but where this game gains ground is on the game itself.
It's a sort of a mixture of space invaders and Galaga and a couple other games, which is a great thing.

So the whole game revolves around a Vortex rift which is open at the top of the screen which enemy ships appear and shoot at you, so naturally you shoot back and fly around the screen and destroy them.
When you destroy the enemy ships while dodging there bullits they drop white triangle type shapes which you touch with your ship.
When you have touched them they fly towards the vortex hole and start to close it which in time it sort of implodes and stops the enemy ships and the level is complete.

The first sector starts off not so busy to ease the player into the controls and the power ups, like speed ups or double or treble fire ect.
At the end of the last level of that sector a boss appears to take out to complete the end of that sector.
And as you go through each sector they get more intense and new enemy's appear, and with around 200 levels there's plenty to go through for a while.
There's new ships to unlock with different strengths and weaknesses, plus online score boards to show off those really high scores and beat other players scores.
Oh and I forgot to mention co-op play to which is cool!.

When I first started to play it I was not sure of this game which the first set of levels of sector 1 were slow to start, but think as I said was to get you used to the controls and what's going on which is in many ways a good thing, instead of throwing you in at the deep end.

The enemy ships and your ship sort of resemble triangler shapes which is a cool retro design, which reminds me of a mobile game called super cross fighter and other games.

There's lots more I could mention but I guess I better round up this review by saying it's so addictive, even though the graphics are by far not the best out there.
It relys on a pure arcade gameplay and 200 levels and all the other things I spoke about and more its a fantastic game for £4.99.

I found myself hooked for that last go to get that bit further to beat my own personal score or someone else's.
It's that one last go arcade game which 2 hours later your still playing.
Just a couple of tips before I end my review, and that is play with a game controller which if you have one a 360 controller or a x box 1 controller as this is a pure arcade shoot em up.
Last but not least crank the in game music slider up full and the sound effects just over half way to enjoy the sound track!.

So stop reading long reviews like mine and go and grab a copy! So are you still there! What you waiting for! 😁

I've played my share of shooting games, while my wife (non-gamer) has seldom played the genre. We just played 2P Co-op and had a lot of fun! She felt challenged but learned the mechanics and game system quickly. We were literally sweating after our second run.

If you are into arcade shooters, especially if you love local multiplayer, this game will definitely keep you entertained with friends. We don't have one more extra player, but 3-player mode is definitely worth exploring.

Finally someone that knows what arcade means.

I think the industry needs more REAL ARCADE GAMES, like this one.

If you are from the old school arcade type, you won't be disapointed.

Avoid the bad guys, and collect the little wite pieces to destroy the damm Vortex. ;)

Looking forward for the final version.
