CHARACTERS

Occupation: A member of the Oba Girls’ Academy Art Club
Hobby: Observing and raising insects
Yukari is Reiji’s younger sister who he has a bit of an age gap with.
Since he can’t do household chores to save his life, Yukari naturally came to do them all herself.
She’s a brave but gentle and modest young woman who faithfully supports her brother.
Being of a scholarly mindset, she is quite knowledgeable about insects.
However, the bugs she raises in her room occasionally make a run for it, and sometimes she serves them up as dishes without warning...
“I just want to be there to pick you up whenever you fall. That’s all that matters to me...”

Occupation: A member of the Oba Girls’ Academy Art Club
Hobby: Sketching, moonlit walks
Toko acts like an adult, but is in fact an odd creature, neither really an adult nor a child.
Her casual mode of speech seems to contradict her appearance as a refined young woman, and she always manages to stand apart from the crowd, never letting others dictate how she acts.
Feeling an inexpressible sense of uneasiness with her current "existence,” she hires Tokisaka to “find her true self.”
“I want you to find something... Me. My true self.”

Occupation: A member of the Oba Girls’ Academy Art Club
Hobby: Illustrating picture books.
Toko’s best friend, she sees in her the vision of an ideal lady.
Tōko, coming from a poorer family compared to the other students of the prestigious Oba Girls’ Academy, has a strong inferiority complex.
Due to this, she despises the other students, her mother, and even herself.
She would rather Tokisaka, who’s suddenly shown up in their lives and has started building a rapport with Toko, keep his distance from Toko.
“...Please stay away from Toko.”

Occupation: A student of Oba Girls’ Academy and an author
Hobby: Making dojinshi
Tsuzuriko is very cheerful and sprightly.
She may seem like the total opposite of Yukari, but they actually get along very well and think of each other as best friends.
She’s made her writing debut in literary magazines and has contributed articles to some less classy rags as well, which she of course keeps secret from the Academy.
She was unwillingly given the nickname “Tojiko” by Tokisaka after he decided that “Tsuzuriko” was too hard to pronounce.
“I specialize in mystery nove—Hey, who’re you calling Tojiko?!”

Occupation: Owner of the Moon World café
Hobby: Making sweets
Kyoko is a widow whose café Moon World is located near Kichijoji Station.
She’s known Tokisaka for a long time, and they count each other as true friends and confidants, intimately familiar with each other’s lives.
As they have both lost someone dear to them, they often act as mutual advisors as well. Her café has a lot of regular customers and seems to be profitable.
“One Kyoko’s Special Blend, coming right up.”

Occupation: Server at the Moon World café
Hobby: Cooking (still learning)
Hatsune is a young woman who used to work at the brothel Yukishiro over in Ueno.
Due to the incident that happened in Ueno and public pressure, the brothel was demolished some years prior.
After it was destroyed, the madam adopted her and gave her the last name “Amemiya.” Now she lives and works at Moon World.
“Oh, umm, you can call me Hatsune. I’m still not used to the new surname.”

Occupation: Curator
Hobby: Sleeping
Maris works at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum as a curator.
She’s half-Japanese, as is clear from her blond hair and blue eyes, and she rarely says more than a few words at a time.
She’s an excellent curator who is exceedingly knowledgeable about art.
She comes off as quite mysterious, but could it be that she’s actually a bit scatterbrained?
“...Reiji... detective?”
SUMMARY
March 1956.In a Tokyo that’s slowly returning to its former glory after losing the war ten years prior, Private Detective Reiji Tokisaka takes on the case of a girl he meets in Inokashira Park.
“I want you to find something... Me. My true self.”
A wave of crimes has been crashing down on the city. Sergeant Uozumi, Tokisaka’s childhood friend and former coworker, asks him to investigate the murders.
Meanwhile, sitting off in a corner of the town of Hoya is Oba Girls’ Academy, the school Tokisaka’s younger sister goes to and where two students have recently disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The vice principal of this academy, Tokio Saeki, implores Tokisaka to find them.
Having taken on all three of these cases, and with Vice Principal Tokio’s approval, Tokisaka enters Oba Girls’ Academy as a teacher in order to dig up information about the students.
It’s there that he meets her again. Toko Kuchiki, the girl who asked him to look for her true self, with a voice as light and as clear as a bell and a casual way of speaking that doesn’t match it.
“Heya. Figured I’d be seeing you soon, Detective.”
More and more victims turn up as the days pass, and the investigation he thought would be oh-so-easy stalls. For some reason, the number of disappearances and unidentified bodies don’t add up.
And the newest victim is—
The secrets of a case from six years prior may just be the key to the current unending cycle of tragedy, and the thing that cracks this woeful world’s shell may be one girl’s smile.

One of the best VNs ive played
Not working on steamdeck. Screen will freeze/ stuck in white screen after act 1.
scammed
The story is interesting, but it's another one of Steam's infamous "This used to be an H-Game, but it got censored." I'm normally not opposed to this process, but you literally need an R-18 patch to get the true ending of the game. The censorship removes not only the smut but also the gore in this murder mystery visual novel. It doesn't make sense to me.
I'm not opposed to sexual themes, but I do avoid outright smut. So I don't like stumbling upon these Steam games where it used to be full smut, but they've just patched it. It feels like a bait and switch, and also I just don't understand it, because there's plenty of H-Content on Steam anyway!
However, if you're not opposed to smut, the story is actually very interesting. I was invested enough to finish the game, but it's part 1 of 3, and I don't know if I want to repeat this experience to see how the full story plays out.
TL;DR: To other visual novel readers, I'd recommend trying Kara no Shoujo(The Shell), but personally, there're certain things that didn't click with me.
Kara no Shoujo Review (Personal Take)
Kara no Shoujo presents a fascinating murder mystery set in post-war Japan, offering a dense, intricate case that’s genuinely engaging. The central plot of uncovering the twisted killings and the dark secrets behind them grabs you from the start. When the game focuses on this core mystery, it shines: the crime scene investigations, clue gathering, and character interrogations create a tense and immersive experience that keeps you hooked.
However, my enjoyment was hampered by the way the game handles certain characters, particularly Toko. While the murder case is the heart of the story, the narrative repeatedly shoehorns Toko into scenes where her presence feels unnatural or forced. From sudden, emotionally heavy interactions that lack buildup, to awkwardly inserted romantic moments, Toko's role often feels like a distraction rather than a meaningful contribution to the plot. It’s frustrating when you’re trying to piece together clues and follow the mystery, only for the story to pivot into an underdeveloped relationship that, frankly, feels out of place.
What’s even more disappointing is how these forced moments seem to overshadow or sideline other characters who arguably have stronger narrative ties or emotional stakes in the story. Reiji’s interactions with characters like Kyoko, Yukari and others make far more sense emotionally, yet the game pushes the Toko narrative as if it’s the only path forward, regardless of your choices.
Ultimately, while Kara no Shoujo’s murder mystery is strong enough to recommend on its own, the shoehorned character dynamics and narrative inconsistencies left me frustrated and uninvested in the personal relationships. It’s a shame because the game had the potential to be a truly gripping, character-driven mystery, but it ends up diluting its impact by forcing emotional beats that don’t feel earned.
One of the best visual novels I've played in a long time.
Game is very good, Yukari is best girl, i got game over lol, guess i am a bad detective
Whew, experiencing this visual novel a second time around was even better than the first.
Last year I enjoyed the MangaGamer release of Kara no Shojo, it was and still is one of my favorite pieces of media of all time. However, I had not gone through the prequel to KnS, Cartagra, before completing it.
This year, I've decided to go through all 4 installments of this series now that KnS 3 was released on Steam, starting with Cartagra. I can now say for certain that skipping Cartagra first was a mistake, and I would recommend anyone interested in KnS check it out first (hopefully Cartagra Rebirth receives an English localization one day!)
Kara no Shojo, or The Shell Part I: Inferno, is excellent. Every time I hear that sax from the opening, Azure Bird, I'm hit with a wave of calm, and I'm brought back to my favorite moments from the story.
I wish this were easier to recommend to others, with the explicit content and all, but I can't imagine this story without it unfortunately (some scenes more so than others haha.)
Just wanted to end this review with a message to the localization director, John Hooper.
Brother, surely there are more terms to explain "facial expressions" than the 400 times I had to read the word "countenance," or use of the idiom "sawing logs" to describe someone snoring LOL. I didn't find the localization as grating as many weebs have found it, but there were moments that had me scratching my head for sure. If creative liberties in that department bother you, I didn't have nearly as many jarring reactions to the MangaGamer translation, for what its worth.
Give it a read!
touko...
Cockbaiting people to buy the subsequent instalments, average Innocent Grey behavior.
It's genuinely infuriating without a guide, but is one of the most gripping and well-told visual novels I've ever read, regardless. I love the post-war setting, the horror and police-procedural elements all work terrifically well, and the art is beautiful. If you like graphic crime stories like "Silence of the Lambs" or "Se7en", you owe it to yourself to jump in and ever look back.
The h-scenes are weird and shoehorned in, and add very little to the experience, except embarrassment.
I switched to this remaster after about 4-5 hours of playing the original translation (released under "Kara no Shoujo"), and even though you need to do some legwork getting the patch of cut content from the developer's site, the re-release is significantly better. Buy this one.
Pretty good but playing trough it is a chore with all the choices to make you need a guide.
Please be sure to download the 18+ patch from the publisher's website. The game is impossible to fully complete without it.
Additionally, please look into the content warnings before proceeding because the "mild violence" warning on the Steam page is laughably understated.
If you play this game, you WILL need a guide. It is extremely difficult to achieve a decent ending without one, much less the true ending.
Its so special. An emotionally gripping story from start to finish. I can't recommend it enough.
One of the best murder mysteries I've read, and it goes way deeper than being just that. I do advise you to get the patch for this (as well as the patches for Purgatory and Paradiso) since the Steam version is censored to the point of being incompleatable, as you are effectively locked out of the true ending, as well as some of the other normal/bad endings. Even those non-canon endings add to the story in several ways. Speaking of which, I've always prefered one of the normal endings (not naming it for the sake of avoiding spoilers) over the canon (true) ending, as the former makes more sense as a conclusion to the story. Overall, great and memorable experience!
I love this game and I love Toko. Thank you so much Shiravune and John Hooper for bringing this certified hood classic to steam
Cartagra was really good. Kara no Shoujo is a whole new beast altogether. A true detective mystery, KnS is all about finding cruel ways to break the player, and color me broken. Terrifying and disturbing bad ends, shocking revelations, disgusting (but really good) gore make this game extremely memorable and unique. Coupled with Sugina Miki's classy, sexy art and MANYO's fantastic arrangements, KnS will leave you wont for nothing. KnS takes the premise of Cartagra and sends it through the roof, forcing my unfortunate soul to actually think and deduce, instead of just letting the story play out. This game really had my eroge-fried brain firing on all cylinders just to find the truth behind one choice. Another thing that really matters in this game are the choices, which have three sets, investigations, notebook deductions, and regular choices, ALL of which can dramatically affect the story/lead to horrifically awesome bad ends. Save a LOT. The consequence of being so cruel and unforgiving (wtf Innocent Grey) is that it takes a lot of loading and skipping, and endless frustration, which is my only real complaint with the game.
I loved the story, the substories, setting, BGs, sprites, CGs, this game is really tastefully done, even the gore. The mystery was difficult to figure out and had me second guessing, but not so difficult that it became ridiculous. I can say that there were no asspulls! The characters genuinely all made me feel for them, even if this game is quite evil sometimes... KnS is best entered completely blind after having read Cartagra, so I can't say too much more. I am seriously hyped to read Part 2 and 3.
A great visual novel. It has a gripping story and pretty compelling characters. Be warned though, the story is pretty depressing. Lots of deaths and the true end is ....
This story is so twisted, I love it.
The game itself is really beautiful, the art is very lovely (and gory at times), while the music is atmospheric and with a great variety. The overall production is therefore very satisfying, including the UI (I wish all VNs had the possibility to instantly skip to the next unread text). Also I really enjoyed the setting and atmosphere, all of it is just very hauntingly captivating! Now the "gameplay" is honestly quite difficult, I'm certain I'd never be able to find out the specific choice combinations for even half of the endings without a guide, but I quite like that complexity actually, it feels very fitting for this game lol.
The story itself is amazing. It's really grotesque and insane, nearly every reveal of the mysteries made me gasp XD. I really liked the way the mystery got handled, especially with the several endings it was fun to receive new information that provided aspects for the whole picture. I highly appreciate the creativity that went into the plot. Also I enjoyed the characters a lot, I found most of them to be quite likable and I enjoyed their writing. I love how the characters aren't portrayed to be purely good or bad but have more depth instead. I also love that the story isn't just gruesome and unsettling but additionally quite depressing on top of that.
I suppose I wasn't a huge fan of the true ending (though it seems rather fitting as an allusion for the second part) and some aspects of the plot felt too unrealistic to be taken seriously by me, but besides that I barely have complaints.
Altogether I really like messed-up stories like this one and am looking forward to play the other parts!
Note: I left the game paused to do other things so it's probably 1/3 of my play time, with all the endings.
There were things I really, really liked about this game, and other smaller elements that were either silly or sort of offputting, which are mostly a product of the earlier VN conventions when this was first released (2008).
I don't think there's a murder mystery game that's better at evoking the gruesome and grandiose nature of the David Fincher movie "Se7en" - the artwork and descriptions are no holds barred in this sense, and it's awesome. There's also a certain charm in the complicated butterfly effect the game's multiple choices and endings brings out, and while I agree with other reviews that the central mysteries make it easy to connect the dots, there are other more sinister secrets waiting to be discovered that legitimately gave me chills.
As far as the annoying elements, you have to get the uncensored patch to get all the endings, including the "true" ending. And boy, does this game really go to town with the random H-scenes immediately before or after the aforementioned gross murders. I'm actually sort of neutral on this stylistic juxtaposition because it's interesting at a high level, but it's really silly when uncovering all the endings that our guy Reiji, who is otherwise a very solid VN main character, just can't seem to keep his pants on, over and over again.
This re-release could've used a 999/Virtue's Last Reward style choice map, with paths hidden until you discover what's gated. Instead, someone who doesn't want to use a guide is up for an extremely daunting challenge to uncover everything. From what I understand the later two entries in this trilogy have streamlined branching paths, which is welcome news, because in this one there isn't a whole lot of shades between the actual endings in multiple cases.
You should go into this game knowing it's a straight up tragedy. The butterfly effect is interesting here, but it probably still won't give you the strongest sense of closure once you find the true ending. There's a lot of wisdom in what the characters say on the ultimately limited nature of agency and the role of detectives in "stopping" crimes - in most cases they're just there to pick up the pieces and make the best of it going forward. For those patient enough to deal with its flaws, it's a strong overall recommendation.
peak
It is truly a great game. As the prologue states, those who enter here shall abandon all hope. This game creates a strong atmosphere, filled with the despair of death, and telling a desolate tragedy with delicate language.
Please note that this is the censored version, without sexual or gory scenes. I recommend downloading the patch to experience the full content.
Solid game after patching.
"Those who dont realize they're lonely are the most pitiful being out there"
- Kuchiki Toko
Though not as good as some make it to be, it's a nice character study stuck in a somewhat confusing mistery which, though it does coalesce somewhat, feels lacking in both setups and payoffs (also the killer is absurdly easy to figure out)
It's also (though only in restrospect, considering the game was originally a stand alone narrative (or a sequel of some sort, but Cartagra isn't on steam and the connections are faint)) the gate to a really good trilogy of edgy 1950's murder mistery's, of which it is the weakest link.
Also like 80% of the game isn't accessible without a patch.
Absolute masterpiece.
Having played the original MangaGamer translation five years ago, I decided to replay this VN via this new remaster to refresh myself on the plot before tackling the third game recently translated. In nearly all regards, this remaster is the superior product, as much as the original holds dear to my heart. It contains a bit more content not found in the original; the CGs are touched up; frustrating aspects of the original's gameplay have been fixed and more quality-of-life changes have been ported over from the next two games. The protagonist, Reiji, is also voiced when he was not in the original. My only gripe with the remaster is the translation itself. Shiravune has localized the dialogue much more for a Western audience which is not inherently a bad thing—it is mostly a matter of preference and not enough to derail one's understanding of the plot and make this remaster worth less than the original.
The plot of Kara no Shoujo (now localized as The Shell) can get very convoluted at times. Frequently, as you play through the story, you may think you are getting close to an answer, only for the game to show another sequence which only gives you more questions. By the third-quarter of the game, it is reasonable to feel a bit frustrated at needing to keep track of so many unanswered plot points. But, as you reach the game's eventual end and go through the various routes, you will discover how everything is connected and you will have most of your questions answered—whatever questions are left will likely be answered in the sequels.
Kara no Shoujo perhaps has more "gameplay" than most other VNs, and this game can be really goddamn hard. You are expected to be super attentive to details and keep track of all bits of evidence you come across; not doing so will lead you to one of the multiple bad ends—and you will absolutely get many of them. In order to beat the game, you will most likely need a guide, as at multiple points in the course of the game you will need to do things in a specific order, click on things multiple times, or click on a pixel-perfect spot during one of your investigations. Though, it is HIGHLY recommended to go into your first playthrough completely blind; if you reach a bad end, try loading saves (do save often) and pick different choices or do an investigation differently/more thoroughly.
Also, this game has sex—lots of it. The base Steam version will come censored; much of the content is cut out entirely if not heavily edited. A restoration patch can be found on Shiravune's website or on VNDB which restores the original content. Frankly, this game could be an amazing story even without the sex; if anything, the H-scenes can feel at times out of place and jarring as it disturbs the flow and tone of the plot. However, it is the way the developers intended the game to be, so I do recommend playing the game with the patch installed.
Kara no Shoujo is an amazing story. It is a gory, visceral and depressing experience, but in its roughly 25 to 30 hour runtime, you will encounter the themes of obsession, madness, acceptance and forgiveness. The most depraved and depressing segments of the game are only matched by the great, lighthearted moments of banter between the amazing cast of characters. The vibrant characters, setting of postwar Japan, beautiful (and harrowing) artwork and wonderfully composed music all harmonize together to create a unique vibe that few other games can replicate. I cannot overstate how much I love this game. It is absolutely a visual novel you should play (if you can stomach the gore and sex).
TOUKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Shaping up to be a great game so far but the translation/localization is just awful, archaic, 'remove-all-traces-of-Japanese-ness' 4kids tier cringe. Natsume-chan -> "Natsuckme" are you kidding Shiravune? What a joke.
You need to install patch to experience the full content.
The Shell Part I: Inferno, also known as Kara no Shoujo, is a VN mainly about mysterious murder (Yes it does have adult content but that's like 5% of the game, so you might still want to treat this game as normal VN)
Characters are very appealing, a lot of detail writings are put into showing their mental and plots in this game is super mind blowing, the investigation and collecting clue parts are done really well, a game with good brain exercise you'd appreciate
Some people complain about the strict condition of fulfilling certain endings but I don't find it very problematic when I backtrack them. This game has 10+ endings however whether it be bad ending or just neutral ending you always learn additional information about certain people or seeing more behind the scene, the animation skip is also very fast so it won't really feel troublesome to collect other endings.
This VN ages really well, but again please make sure you got the patch before playing this game!
"The moon is a kind mistress to the lonely"
Top as it was back in the old version
I hate this game
Another good VN ruined by the shit, forced ending to justify a trilogy. Outside of that part the rest of the VN is worth reading.
I have spend probably hours at this point walking around or sitting on the character relations menu trying to figure things out. This really is a one of a kind VN
heavily censored wtf
The best to ever do it
tojiko respect button (those who know) ------>
really good but also soul crushing
Morbid. --- Thriller. --- Dark. --- Interesting. --- Cool looking corpses. --- Morbid art. --- TOKO <3 --
Interesting and super fu**ked up VN that I FRIGGIN LOVE (it's because I love sick stories and thrillers so much).
ANYWAYS. This is a VN series & I recommend playing "Cartagra" before playing Kara no Shoujo 1 (the shell 1), simply because it's llike a prequel & KnS (the shell) has some main characters from cartagra in it, even the protag & it will be way better if you played that before KnS, I can say that it is like that for me ^^
... AND I HGHLY RECOMMEND USING A GUIDE! :3 Otherwise you will probably get super lost with that many choices and story branches cause it has so many endings and also a true end. //
I use this guide from Fuwanovel:
https://forums.fuwanovel.moe/topic/12352-kara-no-shoujo/
Very good story but on god please download the uncensored patch. This steam version softlock you in 2/3 of the playtrough and has a lot of cut content. I would put a negative review but it's the censored version that's the problem and not the game itself that is bad. Outside of that, it's worth every penny.
i dont know wtf is wrong with my game but i follow guides 100 percent and theres an option that literally never comes up for me thats required for pretty much every route to happen so fuck me and fuck this
Good game, amazing story but I'll be honest... it was a pain to get the 'true ending'. I would've prefered, if the game itself has a timeline feature or something along those lines present in the 'Zero Escape series'. Not a big fan of having to use a guide to reach the true ending because god forbid I missed to click on a single spot for the third time after having to click somewhere entirely different during the investigation sections.
