I think these games are only fun if you're nostalgic for them because they're truly a product of their time.
A solid 1990s first person shooter.
+ Open world design with seamless loading, is very immersive
+ Solid gunplay
+ Runs very well, solid port by Nightdive!
+ Lots of customisation options
+ Main menu contains a game vault which contains cut content, documents, concept art et cetera.
- Sometimes can be confusing knowing where to go (no objectives system) so you end up having to just 'figure it out' a lot of the time. Pay attention to what keys you have and make a strong mental note of any doors you find that are locked, as well as the color of the lock.
Overall a good romp through a classic fps. I enjoyed it.
Too scared to play because of the fog.
10/10, would shoot a zombie gangster again (if I could)
Good remaster but the levels are too labyrinthine.
Very basic 'Doom Clone', but with extremely appealing presentation and time period it takes place in.
Lot of key and door hunting in a huge map, so be prepared for that.
I especially like hunting for all the ghostly visages that you can find around the map which slowly reveal the story, they almost remind me of short snippets of larger stage play you slowly parse together. Really dig the acting and the actors in them, good stuff.
I'd buy this from sale.
Very fun game I do recommend it.
Can confirm this game will help you kill some time.
Nightdive Studios have been releasing a heap of old school games that would otherwise be lost to time and making them (in most cases) compatible with modern hardware and software. I salute them for this great effort to both preserve and give new life to old media and art that would otherwise be dead and gone. I've come across both old favourites from my childhood as well as discovered hidden gems I never knew about in their library of titles.
This is an example of the latter, and it's a BLAST of a game experience! Just so much fun on every level.
However, for me it clashed something intruigingly with my PC setup in a way I've never had a game do before. The longer a session I played, the more delayed my shooting became. I would click and click, and it didn't register, but then it seemed to be gathering in a delayed lineup of inputs, so as my guns would seem to auto shoot and wouldn't stop. So, from what I can gather, there was an issue between inputs being registered and then performed by the game. If I stopped the game and then came back to it, it went fine and smooth again, until it racked up in delays and became worse and worse over time again. I have no idea how to describe this phenomenon correctly, I'm sure there is a term for it, maybe input delay stacking, but obviously the games config and/or optimization didn't agree with my PC for whatever reason.
But, when I tried googling this issue, I didn't find anyone else reporting it, so I'm gonna go ahead and give this a positive review considering the love and care for the quality overall that the game has recieved by the Nightdive crew, cleaning up the visuals and adding info and extras that they could find. I adore the game preservation work they do, and I'll write this down to me having an unlucky exception to the rule of how most players experience this game.
3DO <3
Positive review simply because this game feels ahead of its time, has charm and i wish there was a remake.
It feels like Bioshock demake. Really an immersive sim where different areas have different enemies. I wonder how would this game look like if it wasn't limited by Doom engine with its labyrinth-ish two-dimensional level design. Also it feels like long lost "Blood" relative.
Anyway, game might feel exhausting due to keys/vessels tricky combinations. Thankfully you have a map so backtracking is quite easy. And music gives the right mood.
Interesting interesting... i like what i've seen so far. A little bit random with the enemies... I went from zombies, to mobsters, then two headed demon dogs, and finally gargoyles...
The weapons feel nice.
I'll keep playing. If anything changes I'll update the review. But it's much better than PO'ed(which is from the same company).
I find this game incredibly boring. It is not designed well at all. A "boomer shooter" which was dug up for god knows what reason.
Played on Linux using Proton Exp, Yeah it's a Thumbs Up, Love the Game, Graphics are Great for the age of this Game and remastered, can turn off remastered Graphics and make it look like it used to.
Sound is good for the age of this Game, Game Play is FPS Shooter (could be classed as a Boomer Shooter) with key collecting and other stuff you need to collect, some real weird but fun bad guys/girls/animals to shoot, massive map at the time of release and lots of secrets to find, It is a showcase of 90's FPS Games, and still holds up well today and a lot better then most newer FPS Games.
The only thing missing is the Panasonic 3DO Levels/Map, so for that i can only give it 4.5 out of 5.
Recommended.
Undeniably charming remaster of a vintage 1995 FPS. The massive, interconnected environments are incredibly ambitious for the time, though they can get to be a bit of a drag if you just so happen to miss a switch or a key item tucked away in some corner... leads to either aimless backtracking or having to check a guide. Neither is much fun.
An excellent remaster of a quite obscure FPS game released originally for the 3do.
The level/map design is quite good for a game of its age. Especially considering the typical labyrinth design of other FPS games released in the mid-late 90’s. There will be some backtracking but that is due to the way the map has been designed with different areas of the island having different styles and enemies. You will need to make a note of where different locked doors are since you will need re-visit them later when you get the relevant key.
The gunplay is great. Especially the shotgun and tommy gun for the hit feedback on the enemies.
The cheesey FMV cutscenes are all still there and have been remastered. Theres an extras menu you can view FMV cutscenes and other concept art.
The soundtrack is great and suits the area of the map you are in at the time.
The game lets you kill creepy ghost clowns, so it's a 10/10 for me.
Pretty cool Doom clone from back in the day. I like that it takes place in one large seamless world with lots of key-hunting and backtracking, but it can get really confusing if you don't write down where the color-coded doors are and which areas you've already gotten the required ancient artifacts from. The overhead map is almost entirely worthless and the game really doesn't give you much direction on where to go.
Level design is decent, but a bit too maze-like, and the game's atmosphere is really inconsistent. One moment you'll have characters that fit the theme like the undead gangsters and demon dogs, accompanied by some really creepy Doom 64-esque ambient music, and then the next you'll be fighting clowns with silly upbeat music playing. Some of the enemy types like the flying red faces and generic Halloween skeletons are very low-effort and not at all scary. The weapon selection is just okay - you'll be using the shotgun and flamethrower for most of it, which makes the experience rather repetitive. This game is also extremely easy on the medium setting - tons of ammo and health pickups are thrown at you, and the hitscan enemies like the gangsters shoot like Stormtroopers.
Where the game succeeds is in its storytelling, with FMV flashbacks of the characters playing as you progress through the mansion, slowly revealing how everything went wrong and who the villain of the story is. The acting is a bit hokey, but enjoyable. Overall this game had potential to be a lot better than it is, but it's still a fun game with an interesting setting. Worth buying on sale.
Holy macaroni what an amazing game, I've never played this game before and I have to say it was an amazing experience for me, it felt like an episode from a horror serie like Goosebumps or a Scooby-Doo episode, every now and then it gets a little goofy but it has charm and a spooky vibe that captures a special kind of experience that is hard to find,
i finished this game today, and i think it's genuinely one of my favorite shooters. i really enjoyed how it took the boomer shooter formula, and twisted it into a metroidvania. the combat was also a lot of fun, somehow staying fresh without much variation throughout the game. i did get stuck looking for a key once, but besides that, even if you're walking through areas looking for keys or vessels with all enemies around you eviscerated, the game still feels entertaining and fresh. only issue i have is some obtuse puzzles, but as long as you have a guide or walkthrough those shouldn't be a problem. overall, i think this game is amazing, and i really hope that it gets more content made for it officially or otherwise in the future.

Here I will leave this beautifull capybara, whoever pass by can pet it and give it a thumbs up
(I need Steam points) If you were born in the 80's and remember the birth of FPS and doom games this is a excellent remaster. Fond memories of buying this in the big box at CompUSA back in the day. Remember the crispy new smell of a disk or floppy disk and artwork on the big box and manual you would get inside.Dev's put alot of work in tweaking this and enjoyed it. Personally I seriously enjoyed all the old school memories while playing this from the docks to the mansion estate. Sucks in today's world not many can whip up something original that will stick with you. Remasters can be a hit or miss but this one was just right. Thanks for remastering.
Great game, nightdive never seems to make a bad overall remaster
fun game
short n sweet
Good game.
I wish this setting existed in a better game. Why does the bat enemy emit the cry of a monkey when you kill it?
Excellent Remake. Love the enhancement to the live action cutscenes. The weapons, though limited like the original, the gun play is still fun. Also the whole setup of killing time is like Doom meets resident evil. Very awesome game and awesome Experience. Well worth it!
As a kid in 1997, I easily convinced my parents to get me a 3DO and a slew of games with it.. was real easy as the 3DO had been discontinued and everything was at bargain bin prices. This included a long box version of Kiilling Time. It's badly worn now from use. Otherwise it'd be worth more than a hundred bucks now on Ebay!
I remembered looking at the box inserts on my way home, including the protagonist Hargrove's 'handwritten' map of the estate, thinking what an awesome game this would be. When I got around to playing it, the FMV opening (the same as the one here) and the opening theme instantly got me hooked.
And then I started playing it. I didn't understand why it was just so damn difficult. I could never play it without the easily accessible invincible mode. It was the horrible framerate. I still played it a number of times- always on cheat and I loved it. For some strange reason though, the original 3DO version only featured a bad ending.
Released in 1995 at the time the 32-bit 3DO was on its last legs and poorly poised to compete with the then-upcoming Sega and Sony 32 bit consoles, 3DO put on their developer hat- Studio 3DO, and released some of the best games for the systems. This was one of the best at least for its original storyline, soundtrack, and the creative way it incorporated FMV elements at a time when FMV games where basically just interactive movies with videos.
I've not played the 1996 PC port but this game definitely does the original justice. It fixes the main issue- the horrible framerate.. on hindsight, this is probably why the developers made invisibility so easily accessible.. they know how impossible hard it was. It improves the maps too.
(mild spoilers ahead)
I wish the maps could be made yet more intuitive. I often got lost in the sprawling outdoor areas, wondering which paths I've taken, and those damn levers! I went around it circles trying to find those damn little things that open up the paths you need to advance. Also the power-up amulets etc were never useful- they activate upon collection and when you usually get to them in an area, you'd usually have defeated most of the enemies there.
Overall, as someone who spent hours on the original, this gives Killing Time the justice it deserves. I sure hope they release the OST on Spotify. It's still spooky and awesome as ever.
A doom-style fps with a large seamless world and a very strange atmosphere. I don't think there's anything else quite like it out there.
Flawless remaster of an all right game. Don't get me wrong, the game is fun, but level design is way too maze-like and open at the same time, the game throws way too many enemies at you, however they are pretty much never a problem as the game gives you way too much ammo and even on the so called hard (third highest) difficutly I did not die a single time.
On the hardest difficutly it's like Nightmare in Doom where enemies respawn which isn't fun at all, which means I would recommend playing the second highest difficulty.
Again, a bit too pricy though. Wait for a sale.
Pros: you'll be touched by housemaids
Cons: you'll be tickled by scary clowns
A pretty amazing remaster from Nightdive. I'm mostly giving it a positive review because of how above-and-beyond Nightdive went here, the gameplay is just kind of.. below average.
It's what i'd call a 'spectacle shooter', you'll probably play through it once to see all of its offerings and then never again. The gunplay is passable, but thats it: it doesn't really feel like any of the weapons stand out. Most of the enemies have low HP so you'll kill everything pretty fast no matter what you use.
Hunting for all of the keys and artifacts is probably the worst part, you'll almost certainly need to look up a guide for this game if you don't want to waste dozens of hours of your life finishing it. When you revisit areas enemies stay dead, but sometimes the game is deliberately obtuse about things and likes to hide its switches in easy to miss areas, so be prepared to backtrack. A lot.
However, it's nowhere near the worst FPS game i've ever played, and I did have some fun with it. I just don't think I'll play it again anytime soon.
Coming from someone how never played this back in the day i really had a blast with it and do i say it was my favorite game of 24. Old school fast pace shooting/killing with some fun weapons. The enemy roster is wide and varied which is cool to see from a game made in the 90s. The map is BIG and maze like with different locations changing it up, also tons of secrets that gave you better weapons or power ups(one power up allows you to see all secrets on your map). The game doesn't hold your hand on what you necessarily need to do besides giving you vague hints thought spirits talking. Most of the time you can find out what needs to be done but there was a few time i needed to look up old guides. The game is beatable with in a few hours (6 hours first play through) and if you know what your doing you can speed run it in under 2. The game looks great and the music is good as well. A great game for just killing time!
A really fun and rare FMV shooter that feels like Doom meets Ghostbusters. I missed this one growing up, but I'm really glad it got remastered like this for everyone to play. The story is an interesting one, told through FMV scenes that play in real time in the game's environment. It's a pretty cool effect, especially for the time this game was originally released. If you enjoy classic FPS and FMV games, give this one a try for sure!
Nice game.
Nightdive hit it out of the park with this remaster. Amazing game made even better, sadly the 3do killing time version is not included. But you get to use the 3do actors and weapon sprites which is amazing! This game is a fever dream, a surreal experience. But its a unique, fun and enjoyable one. This game was truly ahead of its time when it came out. Cutscenes in 95? 3 years before Half-Life?
9/10 game wish 3do version was included and its short but thats to be expected
fascinating and engaging. reasonably fun combat, cool settings, great use of FMV. really happy i was able to play this via such a nice remaster. i did end up using the original textures, as the new ones - while nice - are a bit sharp and overdetailed.
metroidvania fps a la powerslave. other than occasionally getting lost the map design is very solid. gunplay and enemy design is all great and the silly fmvs really elevate it into something special. glad nightdive revived this classic.
HELP ME!!!
10/10
Killing Time Resurrected is a remaster done right for a criminally underrated 1996 PC FPS based on a 1995 3DO FPS that's vastly different from its PC version. Not only does it mix the best of both worlds, it also improves several aspects such as some of the maps (rightly so because the original ones tend to feel rather claustrophobic) and even restores cut content in such a natural way. The FMV storytelling, done by professional actors, and the 1930's art-deco setting are very noteworthy, even now.
I'm eager to wait for the modding SDK to get released, sooner or later. Let's see what people can come up with it, especially considering that the game's engine is based on the Atari Jaguar port of DOOM and Resurrected uses the UDMF mapping format.
spooky as hell
Thanks to this edition I can finally play and complete this classic. I couldn't get my hands on it and use the manuals to bring the old version of the game up to the level of playability. Of course, the hit-boxes of poisonous bees and other flying creeps are a bit off here, but I hope that will be fixed.
Nightdive Studio really knocked it out of the park with quite the deep cut for this particular remaster.
Killing Time is a remaster of a Doom engine game that was initially stuck on the 3DO (I think there was a Windows port too but it had some issues as well). What sets this apart from other Doom engine games and Doom clones of the time is that this is an open world game set in the 1920s (so lots of art deco motifs and 20s gangsters galore) and rather than cartoony sprites of monsters everything here is digitized from real world actors/photos as was briefly the style in the mid 1990s and it also seamlessly incorporates FMV videos of various ghosts into the game world to help tell the story.
In addition to a solid if not exactly groundbreaking roster of weapons (crowbar, pistol, dual pistols, tommy gun, shot gun, molotov cocktail, flamethrower, and a BFG/Ankh Gun), the game also scatters around some various items that you will need to get into parts of the world that are gated off so there is a sense of exploration and worldbuilding that a lot of older FPSs lacked. Load times are just a tiny hiccup when crossing zones (which are quite large) so the whole thing really does feel like one gigantic Doom level. Music is an interesting mix of ambiance and 1920s inspired pieces. It is different but it works.
The touches added by Nightdive are mostly quality of life improvements that are expected for modern games, and the sprites and textures are all greatly enhanced over their original low resolution counterparts so it looks good at higher resolutions. The game really does hold up great both visually and it plays and runs great as well. I haven't run into any bugs or crashes in my four plus hours of play time so far. It also runs well on the Steamdeck. About half of my playtime has been on the Steamdeck and I had no issues.
I'm really having a blast with this one and I'd highly recommend picking this up to support the great job that Nightdive is doing preserving classic and obscure games alike all the while introducing them to a new generation of gamers. Other developers and publishers could learn a thing or two about remasters from Nightdive.
Nightdive is a gift we don't deserve.
One of the best remastered / remade games on Steam. Lots of fun playing this one, a complete blast from the past. It feels like "The 7th Guest" meets "Doom". Its a FPS shooter with FMV enemies and cutscenes straight from a Pentium PC in 1995.
+ The game is fast paced, the thrills never stop
+ The graphics are sharp and colorful
+ A plethora of enemy designs, all FMV, with beautiful animations. Constantly meeting new exciting enemies for hours on end.
+ All the weapons work well, the shotgun has a heft to it and is fun to use
+ Giant environments with impeccable level design
+ The music is weird, but super catchy. The music has a certain gaming retro atmospheric feeling to it
- Sometimes you might get lost in the huge environments, running in circles not knowing where to go, this gets frustrating
- The last 10% of the game has you find several artifacts while an undefeatable boss chases you around the map. I would have taken this part out, its just annoying.
Most of the game is absolutely awesome!
Overall 9 / 10
An underrated FPS from the 90's, most likely because of when it was originally released and the console it was put on. The story is interesting and it does have a creepy atmosphere. My main gripe is there is a lot of backtracking, especially in the lead-up to the final boss. The game can be beaten in a short amount of time, but if you played this for the first time like I did, then your playtime will definitely be larger than you think. Other than that, a fun little time to be had if you're into forgotten gems.
As a long-time fan of Killing Time from my childhood, this has been so much fun to play through again. The performance and upscaled textures are great. Tons of fun all the way around! I hope Nightdive takes on more remasters of old games!
One of the best remasters ever made for a niche title that nobody played, but yet is still a masterpiece today!
