Amazing potential. Worked fine enough as an MVP the last time I used it, but it's such a shame to see it seeming to be left abandoned.
Synthspace has a promising future, offering a great blend of creativity and accessibility. A must-explore platform for anyone passionate about the art of synthesis. Five stars!
this is one of the coolest things iv done in VR but i wish there was a none-vr version as well. i know i can accomplish this with a daw but this is so much more fun
This is some really cool software and I'm glad I found it. It is a great way to mess around with creating your own audio synthesizer. After a little bit of messing around and seeing what people have shared I have been able to create my own things. So far I've created a bass drum, snare drum with snares that can be disabled, and a hi-hat. Piano synths are pretty easy but making your own special waves is the fun part and is also more difficult!
Just awesome modular synth, still in development, but looking very good and control is easy. Try out if you're music creation / synth / modular fan.
last i checked, this is one of two vr eurorack simulators, the other being synth vr. both were released at the beginning of the year, had updates a month or so after launch, and then went completely dormant. both are comparable in price, with synth vr coming in about five dollars cheaper. having put in a few hours on both, i can say that synth vr is the more complete product right now - synthspace lacks some essential utility modules like logic gates and inverters, and in general the experience is much smoother inside of synth vr.
i feel synthspace went too deep on trying to look realistic and "pretty" over creating something that at least i would consider more "functional". synth vr goes quite hard in the synthwave aesthetic, but i can very quickly set up the sort of generative exploration sessions that i consider the true strength of modular synthesis. having a giant oscilloscope is cool! having a lovingly and realistically rendered module is cool! but i don't need four variations on the same VCO, i need FLEXIBLE SIGNAL PATHS!
that being said, there's a really neat product under the surface and while synth vr has been MIA since february, the synthscape developer has started publishing updates again! so i'm hopeful that it continues to improve and gives people a proper facsimile of the modular experience at a fraction of the cost
Please add Distortion. So many types of sounds I want to distort and make sound beefy.
Great introduction to modular synthesis, especially considering the price of a real life modular rig. Some bugs here and there and could use some polish, but for the most part functions properly. Would love to see more modules, especially a few more sequencer options. As much as I like it in VR I think there's potential for a non-VR version. Excited to see how development continues.
Absolutely love this, I can happily spend hours building and experimenting with patches. However, it's by no means perfect. If I save what I've spent a couple of hours working on, when I try to load, it just crashes back to desktop. Really hope this gets fixed soon as it's annoying not being able to load my previous projects.
A couple of suggestions for future updates:
1. Would love the ability to label stuff, specifically the blank plates you use to fill empty spaces. That way it would be easier with larger setups to see whats what.
2. A much better explanation on each module, especially the math module. I understand the principle, but cannot get it to work as expected.
3. The ability to load your own rooms, or at least choose exact colours you want.
4. More FX
Interesting Idea and lots of fun!
Can`t wait to see what features will be added over time.
I regularly play with hardware modular synths, and this is an interesting way to test some ideas in a way where you can just go and grab an additional module that you do not have an abundance of.
also could be used as a cool interactive teaching/tutorial tool or funny little tracks
I am so happy that this exists! I have always wanted to play with modular synth gear but never knew anybody that had it and never spent the money on it. This software allows you to draw from an infinite pool of modular gear & just play. The menu system is really great, the knob play in VR space is *spot-on perfect*, and hooking up wires between the modules is an absolute joy. I love this product so much, it has brought a dream of mine to life!
An idea for the future:
- It would be amazing to have a bucket-brigade style delay module. They stretch and contract the delay loop as you turn the time knob & the results are exquisite.
I'm not too musically inclined, your mileage you get will vary on that. It's a really straight forward music production tool and one I see as getting into production.
As someone who's always wanted to mess around with modular synths, but wasn't willing to pay the high cost of entry to do it IRL, this is perfect. It's easy to get started and start making squelchy noises, experiment with different modules, destroy samples until they're just awful screeching and export your hideous creations to inflict on your family, friends and worst enemies, and the immediacy of doing it in VR means that all the skills you learn here will directly transfer to a real rack of equipment.
I like it, it runs well and it's fun to mess around with.
To expand further, I have little experience with modular synths and recently got into them through another VR Synth app, SynthVR, I like them both and they both have their strengths and weaknesses but this review is about Synthspace.
I haven't had any crashes but I have had performance issues from only having a few modules loaded, I couldn't repeat it and it went away after a restart of Synthspace, otherwise it has ran great and I haven't had any usability issues.
I have had one annoyance and thats with the physics of the modules, if you click to load a module in they load in the same spot and will push eachother around and sometimes causing a few of them to go all wacky but that's the only thing that's been weird so far.
All in all, I like it and see a lot of potential with VR apps like this.
Has a lot of potential. Seems to have quite a few bugs so definitely needs some polishing, but it's getting there! I really like that you can make your own modules and that it's an open source initiative to do it. Looking forward to more updates.
This game is so sick. It has pretty informative tutorials and if you know some of the basics going in you should be able to learn it pretty quick.
Im a beginner in music production and wish there was a proper tutorial how and what to connect in what order etc. As someone who doesnt have any background this is hard to learn. But looks and feels really solid. I use Reason DAW (stuck for 10 years, now on Reason 11) this feels just right. Cables and all physicality is great and would love to sink in hours if i only knew what im doing.
Enjoying this so far. Had a pretty straightforward time hooking up a sequencer, sample playback, and some FX. A few minor bumps being in early access, but this is a great start and I'm really looking forward to where the community goes with this. The application appears to have 'good bones'. Connecting wires and turning knobs feels good, way better than turning knobs with a mouse in a VST. Hoping to see tooltips, MIDI controller support, lots more modules, and some additional input modes (e.g. virtual drums pads) in the future. The tutorial is well done, would be good to see more of it though.
Playing on my Quest 2 (PCVR via Virtual Desktop) with a 1070TI and overclocked i5-7600K. Good hardware for a few years ago, kinda aging today, but nonetheless I get smooth 90FPS performance pretty much at all times.
This is the most fun I've had with a virtual instrument (I guess you can technically call it that?) since I first played with VSTs about 10 years ago. I'm very excited for apps like this to see how they'll develop in the future. I look forward to a future where apps like this and Paradiddle and whatnot might be used together within a full VR-based DAW or something.
But for now, even as a standalone experience, this is really something special and everyone who likes synths or making electronic music should own this if they have a VR headset.
Tested on my Reverb G2 + GTX 3070 .
EDIT: As per developer comment, context menu issue was a bug that has since been fixed, eliminating my complaints about the tutorial.
Works great! WMR support is in-the-box; no tweaking required. I thought the tutorials were simultaneously too sparse and too hard to follow (I couldn't figure out the context menu or how to delete items, and I imagine if I didn't have previous experience with modular synthesis I would be utterly lost), but the controls themselves are extremely intuitive, and I could figure out the entire feature set from just screwing around. Sound quality is good; forest environment chugged at "high" quality but worked fine at medium quality. I don't know if the quality only affect visual quality or if it also affects sound quality, but my ears couldn't tell the difference regardless.
I did have a rather embarrasing moment where I was moving my rack around and accidentally deleted the contents by bringing it under the ground. I can see when this would be desireable, but without an undo button it was pretty irritating. Still, it's pretty great for early access software.
It is a bit of a workout to use this, since you need to hold your arms out for long periods of time to fiddle with buttons
Things I would like to see moving forward:
!. Undo Button. absolutely critical, given how easy it is to accidentally delete things.
1. Ability to save and import sets of modules/racks into other projects. I.E., having a rack full of modules that you can bring into another project with its own, already-existing instruments.
2. The ability to rotate highlighted knobs using the joystick/trackpad (grabbing knobs can be a little fiddly.)
3. A drum machine module.
4. Better save management (ability to save over existing save + versioning, ability to rename saves in-game)
Overall a very fun piece of software. Well worth $30, especially when you consider how expensive this hobby is with physical synths.
[First Review Posted?] How great it is already at 1.0, these are realistic sounding modular synths that you can play with in Virtual Reality! Plug the cables from red to blue, and you will soon figure things out. Make electronic experimental music, EDM, Hip Hop, whatever you can get your mind around.
Isn't it nice to use VR for creative purposes? Instead of another Zombie battle game...
This was my first try, you should do the Tutorials, especially if you are new to Sound Apps.
