Winter Falling takes a simple and beautiful art style reminiscent of old fantasy novels and drops simplified unit graphics on top of it, and it works extremely well.
Using squares with symbols on them to represent units makes it easier to identify what's going on in the battle at a glance. You're not looking at masses of humanoid figures all tangled up in each other a la Total War. It's easy to see precisely where a unit is and what terrain effects apply to it at that location, and so on. The advantage of such visual clarity may seem like a small thing, but I feel like it translates directly into making the game more fun.
I learn more about the game, the units, and their abilities each time I play. Strategy and tactics have depth, but the controls are simple. The game can be played without using the keyboard at all.
It's still in early access so it doesn't have as much content as it will eventually. But really, all I want from this game is more. It's easy to recommend to anyone who likes this kind of game.
Good game
I love it definatley needs more updating
pros
fun battle system
constant updates
no dlc
the rpg element is very cool
cons
'easy' campaign throws players into deep pool i almost refunded the game it was so hard maybe make beginner campaign actually easy
very hard to get non human units making it impossible to refill ranks if your greenskins
now this one will change but i would like more factions
suggestions
just some things for future updates
- hand gunners
these rare soldiers use the power of magic instruments to blow through any armour in their wake!
it is rare hand gunners are included in fantasy would love this game to be a exception
ideas- armour- 1 base range damage- 15 fires every 20-30 seconds ignoring all armour
ability massed volley- scares nearby enemies, stuns hit unit and deals 15-25 more damage
nobles/cataphracts
nobles searching for a pretty penny armed with lances and swords and excellently armoured their wealth of knowledge on fighting is unstoppable force if implimented correctly
armour- 5 - 17 melee- cooldown- 15-20 - movement during charge- 7- charge 20-35 target- 2
ability- bloody charge
gains +2 targets (adds up to +4)for every shattered unit during a charge after destroying 2 units enemies around them recieve scare
make flanking stronger
add more unit custimization such as equipment such as armour
spearmen and pikes should be invulnerable to cavalry unless with surrounded debuff
increase cavalry strength vs sword units
cavalry should be made near useless in forests
Very nice game! Cant wait for more updates
Really fun Game, although it is clear that content is lacking but it's still in early access and the developers keeping working on improving it.
Great game! Lovely graphics! Amazing tactics! A+++++++
This game is incredibly good, its an absolute steal at its current price. Definitely an example of genuine innovation and progress in the often stagnant and nostalgia driven RTS genre.
This is better than most of the Total War games.
Promising game, still in active development. Developer has promising plans with open world campaign. Already playable in this state, campaign got a little longer with latest patch so it isn't to short anymore. Also you can mod almost anything in the game (troops, factions, campaign).
Great indie game, perfect ratio between luck, strategy and simplicity, looking forward for the finished version!
Game is extremely fun. The base mechanics feel very good and is one of the very few games that I consistently come back to replay.
Also dev is great at communicating and I love seeing the new updates when I come back to this game every 1.5 months or so.
Highly recommend
Unorthodox, but fun strategy gem!
Solid mechanics and 10/10 visuals.
Such a unique and cool game. My first campaign, I legit had no idea how charges worked and lost so many units every battle that I thought the game was impossible. In actuality, the game balances challenge and satisfaction very well. Its incredibly fun.
Amazing game very addicting rougelike strategy game similiar to Battle brothers but simpler and I love it.
great game that truly feels tactical! Been listening to storm light archives and this feels like what towers sounds like.
Really enjoyed the gameplay mechanics, I play alot of RTS games so once I got the basic knowledge it became even more enjoyable, to the point that I no longer lose units on the battlefield in normal difficulty.
The story itself is really nice there are multiple endings but for me personally I feel the story is to short, I would like to explore the entirety of the map but I understand that its still in early access
I found a minor bug: sometimes when getting rewards after the quest 1 or a few denari will be stuck on the screen and it presist even during battles, the only way of fixing it is by exiting the game and re-opening it
very fun but it can be hard to figure out at first
Very interestingly designed gameplay mechanics.
You will enjoy it if you like commanding skirmish fights.
Totally worth the dollars.
Already a solid game that keeps getting better. Recently added modes make it much more replayable. Looking forward what the dev has in store for us in the future.
best game of this time
one of the best strategy games i ever played, i love it from the start (browser era)
fun game lots of stratigy
Meh. Looks better than it plays.
Very interesting, intricate and fun to use combat system, very excited to see what they do with the game as its only in early access, even in its current basic state this is a very fun game. Would recommend!
fun
This game has the same vibrant enviroment of Battle Brothers but has a more macro approach to battles. And I really like it.
The art and the irony are really a touch from a dev that love his game.
Some reviews say that the game is bugged, i didnt' find any bugs.
Some reviews say that the game is difficult, and for sure it's not easy (but that's a player problem lol).
I'm sad that i could only do one campaign because it was very fun. I hope the dev will add more campaigns sooner.
This game is a good strategy game
Cool game. V much feels like a hybrid of an RTS and tabletop wargame in a super cool way. Things I'd like to see as this continues through early access:
Greater differentiation between factions. Having your starting faction in arena limit your draft selections at town would go a long way towards this. And imo the subtle statline diffs between equivalent units could be more significant/there could be more factional mechanics.
Level ups that give more than just bonus health. Specific stats, second actives, passives, etc would all be cool. Obv it would be a ton of work but I was expecting something more inline with narrative play wargame unit level ups.
Better clarity about the food cost for your units. Overall the food system feels like a very awkward softcap on army size, and the balance of "do I have enough food to buy more dudes" is not super engaging, especially since it's pretty consistent, just semi-hidden info. If there were more options to make interesting tradeoffs between food, time, gold, manpower, combat difficulty, shop access, and other resources (bonus xp? events?) as well as a bit more clarity on those costs, and potentially a bit more of a "push your luck" aspect to some of that, this portion of the game would be a lot more engaging imo.
Greater starting position/objective/layout variety. There's some v fun and interesting tactical fights to be had in this game as is, but once your army gets to a certain size it becomes very difficult for your army to do anything other than just rank and file to route fights. Some of these seem super easy to implement too (wider variety of starting positions for allies and enemies would do wonders imo).
Also I'm unclear if manpower is supposed to equivalent to an approximate army power rating (it feels like kind of? Except that weaker units tend to have more manpower than stronger units?) but if so, it'd be nice to have an approximate manpower estimate for enemy battles instead of swords which mean.....honestly Idk what the swords mean really, they're super vague.
All of these comments are about the new arena mode update, which is all I've played.
Also the runs are a bit long imo, Spending more than an hour on a daily run is kind of intense.
Overall I really like it and I think this game is super worth checking out, especially if you have any love for tabletop wargames. In particular I really love the charge and order systems.
Very fun, dev has been consistently adding stuff to already great core gameplay loop. Get it now, wait and get it, doesn't matter but if you like strategy games you should probably have this one in your library
Seems cool - but too many bugs. Screen goes grey etc. Can't even complete the tutorial.
gud
Not recommended for casual players that want to relax!!!
Each minor update may lead to data loss, removing both saved games and Your progress.
Developers do not even try to let You play as more than a single Company before the game is finished, since other Companies are only unlocked after save shows completed campaign.
Demo is representative of the Early Access - only few more hours of gameplay await until forced 'reset'.
Excellent change of pace for RTS games
The art style is intriguing, the combat is fun, and the game is well polished despite being early access.
I highly recommend, as the developer (appears to be solo) is quite active. The only thing that would prevent me from saying "buy now" is that the planned free play mode hasn't been released- currently you can only play 1 campaign but as various factions/parties. Super excited for the free play.
Solid game. The dev really cares about the game and is active in the Discord server. Game's a lot of fun and incorporates some unique ideas in the RTS space.
yes, good
Very fun, simplistic game. Can't wait to see future updates and additions!
Birb
I don't request refunds often but I did so for this game and it was on sale. The tutorial explains almost nothing and when I looked online to find tutorials for how to play this game I could not find anything helpful. Ironically on my first run I apparently accidentally did okay but then I restarted the game after I thought I understood the game dynamics better. After restarting I could not accomplish anything. I played on normal setting and lost on the "tutorial" battle twice. I could not get farther than the second or third map before my army was getting eradicated. I started over numerous times with the same results. Frustrating and confusing game that desperately needs a competent tutorial before ramping up the difficulty.
Love this game. The developer is super active and committed with regular update and interacts with the community. Also...it's on iOS too for any Mac users. This should really have a higher profile and more reviews. Please keep doing what you're doing developer :)
Good game, i recommend. Small and by a solo dev, but he's active and always working to improve and expand the game.
I can't wait to see what becomes of this gem- as it is there's ~5-15hrs of campaign gameplay (each playthrough is 4+ hours, only one campaign at the moment but you can enjoy it a few times through). There's also some battle gameplay that I'm not personally into, but the campaign really resonated with me so I'm looking forward to more!
Fresh take on the tactical combat genre with a fun mix of table top and RTS gameplay.
The dev has many creative ideas at play during the campaign and battle deployment phase. Along with its charming art style and UI, you can tell they have poured a lot of love into the game.
Commanding units can feel a little clumsy and the campaign is a bit short, but I'm sure the dev can fix these things before its full release, which I will be fully anticipating.
Really good! Nailed the minimalist setting and polish, gameplay is addicting
Manage your expectations, and you’ll find a competent strategy that offers something a little different. The stand out is probably the game mechanics, which doesn’t evolve very much, which drags down the playtime.
It's like a if total war had come out on gameboy. super fun and hope it continues to expand.
This game may not be ready for prime time and may be in early access for at least another year or two, minimum. Currently, the dev seems to have fixed the major bugs, but it has limited replay value (except for the level creator / shared levels from other people). The core gameplay is quite fun, but it's a campaign and there's really only one. Until the dev adds some kind of dynamic gameplay (maybe an event manager / story generator, doesn't have to be new maps, just random enemy armies moving through), the replay value is minimal. That being stated, it has high potential and if that is done, will be worth double. Until then, get this for under $10.
A true gem. Looking forward for the 1.0.
Good game
The game has more of a DND-esq feel to it rather than a proper strategy or tactical game, which if that's what you're into, all the power to you. However, the combat system is very clutzy, you can't really keep your troops in a formation if their life depended on it, and your ranged units will stay as far away as possible from the enemy, which makes it utterly impossible to deliver a volley anywhere except for a few enemy units in the front row. All in all, it's like if TABS and DND had a baby, but falsely rebranded as some tactical game.
